It's just a matter of which country spread the language the most, I guess. But hey, there's no politically correct way of doing things here... They could use the flag of the "original" country where the language was first spoken... I don't know, they should replace the Spanish flag for the Castillian. And something similar would happen to all other languages... people would not be able to recognize the flags anymore.

As for the regional differences, well, I'm with Mace here. I hate when I get a "Spanish Spanish" instead of the Argentinean Spanish. Specially with movies, not so much for an internet site because we are used to the International Spanish (which is not International at all).

In any case everybody should be speaking Spanish, the most beautifully and graceful language of all. Period. We're a lot more than 5 million by the way.

Yup. Heck, Florida alone has more than 5 million Spanish speakers!

Waht I do hate tho is websites look at your IP and then make the choice of language for you. I don't speak French thank you and French is not the national language of Belgium, Vlaams is and it is not Dutch either.
It is easy to wind the wife up with Vlaams/Netherlands and the grandkids complain if their films don't have Vlaams language option on them.

I completely understand. I never realized just how much the internet seemed US-centric until I left.

Having lived in Mexico for three years, I can tell you that they do exactly that on Mexican websites. Spanish gets a Mexican flag and English a US flag.

That's not correct. There are more native English speakers than native Spanish speakers worldwide. Of course, you are correct about Mandarin being the #1 language.

i had a boss in the past that wanted me to put a canadian flag on the company website rather than the unionjack simply because it might offend people

i quit that job shortly afterward - couldn't handle the stupidity of management
