I spent all of my money to buy the Warthog.

I don't have any left to buy the rudder, and sadly i don't even have space to do so, else it would be painful to use for many reasons.

Are the rudder pedals a necessity?
I read some topic about a real pilot who said the rudder pedals only have use if there is crosswind or you have to tax on the ground.

Depends on the sim you fly. They are more necessary in older airplanes. I use it about 5% when flying in DCS A10C, even less in Falcon. When in the ground, you use the rudder to steer though, but I guess you can manage with the keyboard for that for the meantime.

Saitek Pro Flight rudders are the cheapest ones available IIRC, and it's what I have. Serves the purpose beautifully.

Oh, and welcome to SimHQ!

Again, would depend on what sim you fly. You might want to have a shifted function to do this you're playing modern sims, but with the less button-pushing required of older aircraft, you can find space no problem.

Correct me please if i understood wrong.
You are talking about pressing shift and then using the stick to rudder around?

I'd fly with Il2 first of all.

If you fly IL-2 you dont have use to throttle mini-stick axis.
So set horizontal movements do control rudder, better than use keyboard.
One guy around - Jay Hall/WhistlinggDeath - advocates that you control rudder better (faster) with you thumb than with your feets.

Do you have a racing setup, by any chance? I found that my gas and brake pedal work as rudder pedals. All of my sims recognize them as rudder pedals. That surprised me.

yes i have the g25 pedals.

The only problem is that when i push on the pedals my chair goes backward because it has wheels and it's an office chair.

I don't know a solution to this problem.

How about one of these:
  • use a different chair
  • use wedges or chocks to keep the chair from rolling away
  • place the chair on a small rug to increase the friction
  • place the pedals on a wooden board with a hole cut out to put one of the chair wheels into

I have a rolling chair, I use a soft mat so the chair doesn't roll back when I push on the pedals. However, I can still rotate my chair.

I had the same problem and found an comfortable rotating "leather" dining room chair which sits on a round foot. You can thus rotate the chair but it doesn't roll away when using pedals. The underside of the foot has some sort of felt material so it slides easily on the hardwood floor if you lift your butt off it a tiny bit. The chair is a bit Miami Vice-ish but it got approved by the family and it's very comfortable.

But I've flown years with rudder mapped to either a twist stick (no so good) or a spare axis on the throttle (works fine) so you can absolutely manage without pedals. All your simming buddies will think you're a lamer though ... It's a bit like buying a sports car and then opting for a automatic gearbox.

when I'm too lazy to take the pedals off the shelf i use the targeting cursor of the tqs (and i manage targets with the UHF/VHF hat).

Are they necessary? No. Not really. TrackIR is much more important, IMO. Nice to have? Sure. I do use them (Saitek), just not enough that I would run right out and buy more if they crap out. Use those little furniture "cups" that you put under table legs on carpet to keep your chair from moving.
