I watched it again last night, my 4th or 5th time overall. Man, does this movie get better every time you see it, or what?

Serenity is a fantastic movie if you are familiar with the tv show. I hadn't seen the show when I first saw Serenity at the theatre. When I saw it again though after I had watched the 14 episodes it was a completely different experience.

My GF thought it was like a TV episode and didn't like it. Where to begin?

Yes, it is fantastic (though I wish Whedon didn't feel the need to have the actors say something cute every 5th line...1/3rd the amount of jokes would have been fine). Let's hope Whedon's newfound status as a hot hollywood commodity allows him to make a sequel (he alluded to wanting to do another in a recent interview).

Was never as fond of the movie as the series.

Perhaps because it tied up all those things that could have run for three entertaining seasons as a TV show so quickly.

Or because of the completely unnecessary and cheap deaths, surplus to plot development requirements.

Or just perhaps because I preferred curvy Kaylee to skinny Kaylee.

I didn't think the deaths were cheap (though one was cliched somewhat) or unnecessary. The more shocking death was pretty powerful when I first saw it. If anything, having the heroes emerge from countless perils unscathed is cheap, and Whedon doesn't work that way, which I think makes the dramatic stakes higher, which is good. It's the "and they rode off into the sunset and lived happily ever after" expectation that upsets or pisses off some viewers, I think.

Click to reveal..

What, pray tell, was the point in killing Book?

They just turned up and there he was.

They may as well have discovered he'd slipped on the bath mat getting out of the shower, and broken his neck in Serenity.

The Operative was wiping out every place Mal ever took sanctuary or hid out, in an attempt to draw Mal out. Book's death on Haven did just that.
