Whoa!

Im still in two minds about whether the F22 is a boondoggle or not. It seems as if it is in constant flux as to its state and capabilities.

I don't blame them. That jet has issues...

I can't even begin to comprehend why there is a problem with the oxygen system in the F-22. What is it, 70 years or so since pilots have been using oxygen? Did they re-invent the wheel with the oxygen system in the F-22 or what?

Not a political comment one way or the other, as this thing was developed over decades and multiple administrations, and it is hardly the only example: Military Industrial Complex.

They are using a more compact design for the OBOGS now, and it also does some other things.
Mind you, they can`t figure out why they`re having these issues either. Some people suspected that some of the problem F-22`s were started up inside a hangar, which is a no-no for an OBOGS system (it sucks in plenty of CO/CO2 AFAIK).

no, they just screwed up the design allowing exhaust to leak into the OBOGS via bleed holes.

If by that you mean 'The OBOGS is designed to be run by bleed air from the engines' ... at least AFAIK.

Carbon Monoxide was leaking into the oxygen.

which is basically the same as sitting in a garage with the door closed and car running.

I dont think the designers planned on the aircraft being spooled up and idling inside the hanger during pre-flight, but it was having issues during flight as well.

Yeah, they hardly ever turn out any good planes. P-38, Constellation, Hercules, U-2, SR-71. No good at all wink
