I remember people wondering why Reverend Jim was a Klingon. That's all you heard. LOL
"Taxi" was on the air when I was a small kid so it was a bit before my time and I didn't discover Christopher Lloyd until I saw him in Back to the Future. I didn't see Star Trek III until I rented it on VHS in the late 80's.

EJO in TNG is so very hard to picture.
Shame there's no screen test anywhere.
Check out this info from EJO's IMDB page, Was offered the role of Jean-Luc Picard in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987). He would have been contractually obligated to work exclusively on the series, and not do any other projects while under contract. Olmos wanted the flexibility to be able to work on multiple projects, and declined the role on that basis. Patrick Stewart was eventually cast in the role. Was considered for the part of Klingon Commander Kruge in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), but lost the role to Christopher Lloyd because Lloyd was taller. Fortunate for us that Stewart got it. Star Trek III...might have been better. I remember people wondering why Reverend Jim was a Klingon. That's all you heard. LOL I kept waiting for him to say "Okey Doke."  Wheels

If I had to get on a spaceship and there was a high likelihood of interstellar danger and freakyness going on, I'd want someone with Picard's judgment, poise, morality and coolness under fire. The others don't even come close. I can't recall any instances of Kirk exhibiting bad judgment, questionable morals, or panic under fire. Poise? Well, I guess Kirk is more visceral or mercurial, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The military needs Pattons as well as Bradleys.

You know, its interesting since Roddenbery's vision of an ideal Captain likely came about from his time in the service, where he flew 89 combat missions in WW2 some in B-17's, then flew airliners for PanAm, and then joined the LAPD. His Dad was also a cop. I'm figuring all that real-world experience with leadership, as a leader and a follower of other good leaders, got reflected in his imaginings of how Kirk, Spock and Bones behave, and how the crew reacts.
Somehow I mistakenly thought he was a NAVY guy, but I think I hade him confused with someone else.

Cdr Adama (EJO) gets my vote. None of the other commanders had to deal with so much adversity, so comparatively little resources, an enemy that was so much focused on genocide rather than simply winning a war over humanity. Yes, mankind often was under threat in most of these shows, but never was mankind actually so close to complete annihiliation, with fewer than 30,000 survivors. He time and again was forced to make very tough decisions, and still preserved his humanity, and respected the civilian side of the chain of command when he could easily have created a military dictatorship, which would certainly have made his job a lot easier on a number of occasions. But, he chose not to give up his principles for expediency. Also, he's the only commander that was permanently dealing under the conditions of an initial strategic defeat. All colonies, all planets, 99.999999% of all humans lost, and that's just the start of the show when things are still comparatively rosy.
