Hey All,

I had a Special Treat today as I was watching TV which I rarely do much these days.. It was on the H2 Channel it seemed to be a 2 Hour Special of The Universe.. they had looked back to the past from the 1600's to the current day theories..

It was talking about some of the better known discoveries in the past and how Religion had hindered Growth of our knowledge of the heavens..

I guess most know that they used to think the Earth was in the Center of the Universe and everything in the solar system revolved around the earth..

But Religion has been more understanding of these things and even the Catholic Church has had some Growth..

Seems the Universe according to the experts is expanding and will eventually end in the big crunch or really just fly apart down to the Atoms...

Did anybody elese see this show.. Well at the end one Astrophysicist kinda boiled it down to we are the Universe and really are made of Star Stuff..

kinda wierd how it all began tho. but I wonder what does the Univers Expand Into?? is that just dark matter beyond the edge of the Universe, or is it just a voidless expanse the Known universe expands into??

Perhaps We we're the Dinasours.. as they say that energy never dies it is just transformed into other forms and perhaps we just transformed into other forms of life over the eons..

Remember, if no one is watching, a universe has no meaning.
It takes an observer to manifest a universe.

The synopsis sounds alot like Carl Sagan's output: "we are made of star stuff".

Sagan was a scientist with PhD in astronomy and astrophysics, advisor to NASA, but also a freemason, as such he was believing in a supreme being - the great architect of the universe, which is not an antagonism in my book.

Are you sure it wasn't back to back episodes? The Universe is one of my favorite shows and I know there is a new one on Sunday night at 10. I don't watch the History channel at all anymore, although I watch H2 a ton. If you like The Universe, I also suggest Through the Worm Hole with Morgan Freeman on the Science channel.

One of the thoughts is that it is in a cycle where it expands and contracts. It keeps expanding to a point and then will start falling back in on itself and then have the big bang all over again.

Another was that there are multiple universes in different dimensions and the space between them is just dark matter.

This stuff is awesome and I admit that it makes my head hurt sometimes while watching.

I am really interested in this kinda stuff but was thinking the other day about black holes. On any show I've watched they show you the hole from a top down view with all the matter spinning around the event horizon, but I was wondering if anyone knows what a black hole would look like edge on?
Any other information bout black holes would be appreciated as well please, thanks.
Mick.

Correct. If spacetime continues to expand at the ever increasing rate that it is doing so at the moment, our atoms will eventually fly apart. It is a misnomer though, to completely rationalize spacetime as accelerating its rate of expansion and is better comprehended when you spatialize the fact that our fabric is akin to the covering (brane) wrapped around a ball as you blow air into it. Two points that are close together expand slowly when you start but later expand faster yet, the outward expansion from the center (the origin of the big bang) remains a similar rate to the start of the expansion.

I'm simplifying here but start with this to see what I mean. As it gets bigger, those two parts are further apart (imagine them as atoms) and as it continues, they get farther and father apart faster. Eventually, the strong atomic force will no longer be sufficient to hold them together as the distance becomes too great.

All this makes sense until you begin to realize atoms might not be atoms but instead composed of vibrating strings...

The edge of the Universe is possibly just that--an edge. Beyond it, nothing. Not nothing as in empty space, but no space--nothing. This, of course, assumes you know and comprehend what "nothing" really is. The truth is, none of us do. That's right! None of us. Nothing as in, I hold up a jar with no air in it or any other molecules--what is it. People answer--nothing! Right, but, what is nothing? This is the most important question mankind can answer right now.

As far as what is beyond the edge--it is nothing but probably a boundary that separates our Universe from others. Maybe we're just in a bubble...

Remember, our ability to spatialize dimensionality is limited by our current plane--i.e. the 3rd (direction) and 4th (time), beyond that, we can wander into higher levels but not even sense them as we're trapped on our current plane... all the way up to eleven, to be precise. Read up on M-theory, it is fascinating.

Oh, and watch this for a start:

Then read the "Elegant Universe" by Greene and Hawkings "A Brief History of Time."

If you grasp these, you'll have many more questions I can assure you.

The fact that the universe seems, on winding backwards, to run down to zero
distance, does not mean that it had to have been finite to start with, or have
ever had an "edge" whatever that might mean in this context. All we can know
about is that amount of the universe within our back-in-time light cone. We
can't say anything about what's outside of that, though we may eventually
formulate some math that strongly suggests what its character may be. For now,
it is entirely consistent with what little we know, to consider that a universe
of infinite "extent" expanded from 13.7Bya in a domain that was already unbounded,
by a factor that inflated distances from the Planck length to 10^42 ly (the
expansion of space allows 10^42 ly in 10^10 years), that is a factor of around
5*10^92. When you're a universe, you define your own parameters. Infinity, the
very concept, is something conjured by the manifestation of the universe, so
as it's making the rules, it can if it pleases start out infinitely large and
grow by a factor of ten to the ninety-two. I for one am not going to argue with it.

Well MR Blasstmen we are in a bubble of sorts.. Remember the Picture of the Universe?? sort of looks like an egg..

I did see some TV Shows with Hawkins and had my Black Hole theory thought a few days after watching that show.. Beleive it was a Brief history in time??

Some cool stuff but still so much more we do Not know..Funny in 500 years from n=know most of are know known theroies just might been wrong??

as for the 10th dimension not being able to see more is just the limits of most peoples thoughts Finite..who is too say there are not a google of dimensions??

same way as the nembers we used about 50 years ago to show the size of the universe is what we know have for a deficit.. LOL!! just funny how over time the thing Universe just Grows and grows..
