I wish I could get that thread back to verify if anyone mentioned anything before you in it... but you might want to start thinking about which plane you want. I'll probably just have to take your word here. smile

On a ontopic note. This sounds like a great feature addition and I hope you guys make some good money off of it as well. It seems kind of biased towards the allies but I am not sure there is much you can do about that.

I do think this is going to skew the server scores even worse since server score is almost 100% ground attack and just about every plane for the allies will have ground attack features where as only the 2-seater/bombers for the cp have ground attack abilities.

Hey many thanks, I will think about wanting a Sopwith Pup wink But really, I'd rather wait if somebody else claims - I'm not 100% sure about my memory. It was late at night and my suggestion was just off the cuff without giving it too much thought. Really puzzled why such harmless thread was deleted.

Up to six guns on the Dolphin. Imagine the power! Imagine the weight! Imagine the drag!

Sounds like a great option for blasting Gothas out of the sky.

The Dolphin shouldn't (and probably won't) be able to mount six guns at once. Historically, new Dolphins arrived with four guns fitted, two vickers and two lewis pointing up at an angle. Most pilots removed both lewis guns, while some retained one. 87 Squadron, removed the lewis guns from the cockpit and mounted them on the lower wing firing forward but these couldn't be reloaded in flight.

The real beast is going to be the modifed Bristol F2B F.II that can be fitted with an extra two lewis guns on top of the wing. That gives three guns firing fowards and two firing backwards! The Albatros D.II should be pretty interesting too with an overwing mounted 20mm Becker cannon!

Should the D.III really have an overwing Lewis? Or is this an error.

It would be nice to have only one lewis on the Dolphin (ie. a three gun configuration) - this shouldn't be too hard. I also wonder if the HP O/400 twin gun option will add a new turret (double mount) or give the plane an additional crew-member...!

I'm quite afraid of the Beckers! But this new system would be great for some of the early war two-seaters (Morane L or F.E.2 both had many different options)! Here's to hoping...

The d2 will make a fun ground attack plane but it wont be good for shooting down bombers or 2 seaters or combat since it is already slow and added drag will mean even a snail will extend away and that is on a good day.

well, it doesn't seem unreasonable to me that a German pilot might have a lewis mounted as a trophy, and for a little extra kick.

I agree with adding more guns to Albatroses...FliK 41 was fond of it.

Central had a lot of Lewis guns available, they fell out of the sky pn s regular basis…Crews seem to have been as impressed with them as Entente flyers were. I read somewhere that MVR had captured Lewis guns set up round his airfield for extra AA defence. They were also used instead of Parabellums for observers, maybe they were lighter or handled cold conditions better.

LOL Mog'

"...fell out of the sky on a regular basis..."

...while there may be some truth to that, it sounds more like a nifty little tag line! Falling out of the sky from an average of ten-thousand feet, on a regular basis or otherwise, tends to make a Lewis gun pretty darn unservicable! But even if a few were still worth using, how long you think it took until you needed a replacment part...

But, be that as it may, I'm still ok with it. Heck, the Albies already have the "trophy aldis", let's give them the "trophy lewis" to go with it.

Nah, I think it is/was a game-balancer move - So I support it and made the purchase!

...but don't kid yourself. With the new working foster mount.....the Central Powers side needed something to prevent the masses from screaming "allied-bias!"....erm'...no wait....that already happened didn't it?

Bottom line though -- it's going to be a ton-o-fun playing with all these new toys!!!!

[EDIT]: Looks like you're right Mog', thanks to, and I quote, "the BE2c/d/e delivery Service" hahaha

More toys, less genuine feel. I hope they are enjoyed but "moar gunz" isn't what's going to provide a satisfying experience of aerial combat.

I don't think 777 is playing "Moar gunz pl34s3".

...I think it all has to do with the upcoming channel map. These new cannons are anti-sub guns.

Nothing less genuine about it.

...the new foster mount...

It's what some would argue a long overdue addition.

Nothing less genuine about that either.

...but all these new features sure do help the Entente cause....

So what does 777 do so Central doesnt feel left out and cry Allied Bias?

...I think this is an amicable solution......for now.

I bought mine.

[edit]: Excluding rear-seat turrets - with the new foster mount, and upward fixed Dolphin/RE8 guns, many of the entente crates can now shoot "other than fixed-forward". Central would have NONE without the Lewis gunned Albies. Gotta' give them something, yeah?

The Germans apparently had so many captured Lewis Guns that they rechambered some of them for their 7.92mm round.

And yes, they were mounted on German aircraft:

Extremely cool responses guys! (and extremely cool update Jason)!

I wonder if there is any chance that gun jams will get an overhaul (to produce types of gun jams which are a bit more punishing....)

Anyway, it is a going to be funny to watch newbie load up with the maximum firepower and then go down in flames... It is a shame that the Fokker E.IV isn't actually an E.III variant (as that would give D.H.2 pilots a lot of pleasure).

When an allied aircraft ditched or crashed on the German side there were normally a few things that could be salvaged and the lewis guns were almost never destroyed. They ended up with a very large number of lewis guns and ammo but re chambered quite a bit of them to 7.92 and installed them on a wide variety of aircraft.

*woops there was a page 2 and I was beat to the punch.

Yes! this is cool, but will you have to buy the mod to use the proper Lewis Mount on an SE5? Seems to me if you have a plane that has a Lewis mounted on it already, you should be able to use it to fire upwards. "Trophy Mounts" and Rockets ought to be extra.

There is not a weapon mod for sale for the SE5 so my guess is that you will get to use the reload animation and 45 fire mode for free. I think that is just part of the game engine update.

Great news overall, and I was hoping for* Le Prieur rockets for ages. smile I hope the historical method of delivery is absolutely necessary as well, and they are hilariously inaccurate otherwise. If theres any deviation from the procedure it should be the case...IE

Quoted by Harry Woodman in Windsock, from Recherches et Inventions, April
1935:

"The rockets were charged with about 200 grams of black powder and at the
front they had a wooden penetration cone to which was fixed a triangular
knife blade. The rockets were launced by an electric switch in the
cockpit, in groups of several ata a time (bouquet!). The aircraft was in
a nose dive at the time of ignition and the rockets launched at a range
of 200 metres woulds penetrate the envelope of a German 'sausage' and set
it on fire thanks to the stream of incandescent matter which continued to
spout from the rear of the rockets. On May 22nd 1916, the 'rocketeer'
Charles Nungesser and five other great war aces effectively participated
in the recapture of Douamont, setting afire most of the Drachens along
the 35 km front, depriving the German general staff and most of the enemy
artillery of valuable information. Mr Le Prieur's invention caused the
destruction of about 50 German kite baloons."

An American observer is quoted from a US War Dept report of Dec 1916

"The fire is commenced at 100-150 metres whilst diving at an angle of 45
degrees. The steeper the dive the greater the trajectory and the more
effective the attack. The attack should be made in the direction of the
length of the baloon and against the wind... the ring of the front sight
permits the pilot to calculate the distance at which the firing is to
commence ..... the pilot should fire as soon as the balloon fills the
front ring.

The discharge of the rockets does not occur immediately the button is
touched and the delay varies slightly from one rocket to another. It is
absolutely necessary to continue to hold the target in sight and the dive
until the last rocket has been discharged. If the pilot breaks off or
pulls out of the dive too quickly the last rockets will go in different
directions and give a dispersion which is altogether inadmissable.

Should be fun! smile

I still hope that further work is being done RE: the dodgy turret system, as I have all the two seaters barring the Halbie...but never bother actually manning a turret myself as its pretty frustrating at present. Would be great if this is so....haven't been keeping up to date on the issue tbh. Heres hoping...but I have a funny feeling it will be fixed before too long. smile

A nice surprise and bonus would be further FM revisions, which a lot are waiting on too. I've kind of accepted the 'balancing' thing way back from the Pfalz DXII engine etc, not a big deal to me really. The Huns should consider a change of name to "RFC-Wanabees" along with their Aldis and Lewis guns, and start drinking more tea. biggrin They did pinch the Triplane idea as well, lest we forget. Bless em. Imitation is after all the most sincere form of flattery. wink biggrin

Will be interesting to see how performance impact is modeled with more than standard guns too, I'm going through a Sop TripeHound phase atm....and I'll be getting me another gun and trying it out. yep Not fond of where the Aldis is mounted though, would be cool if we could change it to centre mount with the mod.

Good stuff though overall, looking forward to it. thumbsup

Darn....was hoping the Career mode would get a little love. With all of these cool toys it would be great if they could work on getting it out of beta.

There were quite a few captured during ground operations too. Not sure how many of those would have made it to the air service as the German infantry prized captured Lewis guns as much as German airmen.

I do hope weight and drag is modeled for the extra weapons, so that we get the compromise between agility and firepower.

Ordered the full set ;-)

You know they want to have an outstanding career mode....why wouldnt they?
Absolutely, RoF wants to be the definitive ww1 sim. No doubt that they do.

It's got to be a work in progress though. These releases fund the work on the AI and the career mode, but it's going to be incremental.
Certainly they are working to get the career mode out of beta. No doubt there. It'll be great, complex, and with many options smile

They are modeled, but we do not know if the result will mimic WW1 pilot opinion.

This weapon mod is fantastic, I'm really love the fact that the Halby and DH4 get 2 forward machine guns, the N28 will have balloon gun (incendiary ammo?), the 20mm cannons YES! The big davis gun on the HP LO! And the rockets WOW can't wait to see those in action with all the smoke and sound effect WOW PERFECT!!!

So much fun to be had with this: all-cannon dogfights, all-prieur-rockets dogfights! Prieur rockets as unlimited ammo!! OMG.... hahaha
