I was wondering what the general consensus for Whirlwind of Vietnam was. More flight simulator or arcade? Worth buying? How is the overall quality? Game modes ect.?

I remember reading a review (think it was here on SimHQ) which essentially said the game was rather poor. Though Maybe patches have made the game worthwhile?

Any input would be appreciated.

I assume it is in the same state it was back at release? If so, based on that review, I will probably just skip it. No training missions and what seems to be like a generally incomplete product is a huge put off.

Too bad, I would've like to fly a UH-1.

Flogger, I've played WoV and it does suck bad! There are only a handful of scripted missions, the missions are very hard because of lack of any real navigational aids, you can't tell who's friendly and who's enemy, you can't even tell where the enemy is because they are below the treetops, you can't hit anything with the miniguns, weird control layout and the sim runs rather laggy on Windows 7 (my PC anyway).

Note that I think the lack of any navigational aids or cues to where the enemy is, visually, has been left out because you are indeed in a Huey with no fancy avionics or helmet-mounted display. But the way the developers did integrate that information is more than sub-standard.

The one thing I did like was the animated cockpit where the sticks and switches move.

I don't believe that it has ever received any patches or user-made mods to remedy any of the issues, so I would definitely skip it.

Just get away from that one. Use your bonus to get another game. Or donate it to a poor kid in Mexico. It's just not good for your (mental) health for reasons Flyboy said above.

I picked it up for $5 a while ago for the heck of it. If you get into it realizing it's a $5 game you'll have fun. Name another simulation that lets you fly around over Vietnam in a Huey gunship with any semblance of realism. I enjoyed it for what it was, rather then lamenting what it could have been.

Vietnam MedEvac. Sure you can't shoot rockets in it, and there are little soldiers who scream like maniacs everytime you fly overhead. But a lot better choice, IMHO, if you can find a copy. I think Beach wrote a review about it if you want to know more.
About Whirwind over Vietnam..sometimes, my friend, there's something that's not even worthy of your 5 bucks. This one is a good example. Well, IMHO, of course, but it seem like there are many who share that thought.

Have it and I really don't think it's as bad as some have voiced and as I have said before on this subject I have spent way more for alot less. I think some of the problems with this sim (besides it's uncompleted state) is not alot of people fully understand the nature of helicopter warfare during the Vietnam war. Vietnam wasn't Desert Storm when it came to the helicopter and if your expecting that type of helicopter experiance from WoV you are going to be sadly disappointed. Vietnam had very few large battles, most action was fought against an enemy who were hard to find and didn't attack in large numbers and had a nasty habit of melting back into the jungles after an attack. But they are there as a few black clad VC who fell victim to my mini-guns will attest. So if your expecting helo on tank or helo on large troop formations then you need to look elsewhere. The primary weapon your enemy will attack you with in WoV is the AK-47, not a shoulder mounted AA rocket. Vietnam was the first war that saw large scale use of the helicopter but not in an attack role like a Cobra or later Apache but more as an airborne troop transport. The Huey wasn't designed from the start as a helicopter gunship, it was basically a bus with a few M-60's hung out the side for defensive fire suppression, and even the later "gunship" versions were really nothing more then a compromise untill a dedicated attack helo like the Cobra came on the scene. If your not interested in this type of early helicopter warfare WoV would probably never appeal to you even if it was a flawless game. Despite it's many short comings (and there are a lot of them) if your interested in the early stage of helicopter warfare (like I am) WoV can give you a little taste and sometimes a little is better then nothing, if there was an alternative I sure would like to know about it. If anything the one thing I really wish this game did have was a mission editor.
cheers

Not a bad assessment, godzilla. What you say is true with regards to having to take into account how the war in Vietnam was fought and how helicopters such as the Huey were used. Indeed, if that is what you want, by all means have a look. Like you say, sometimes even a little visualization is better than nothing. All that aside, I don't know if the game will function very well on Windows 7, though, as I stated before.

By the way, I think I have read that there are some either Cobra or Huey missions to be flown in the Wings Over Vietnam mod, Yankee Air Pirate. Might be worth a look as it's built on what seems like a better game engine than Whirlwind Of Vietnam and is continuously being upgraded with more graphical improvements, more missions and more flyable aircraft. It's not free, though.
