I've been planning a simpit build for a while. However, due to several military PCSes this year I haven't wanted to start construction on a pit only to have it get banged up in the move. To pass the time I figured I would make some full scale blueprints for my build. I noticed that there are a lot of great resources for the jet crowd but I am a prop-head. I've seen a couple of excellent WWII builds around the net but not a lot in the way of blueprints. Long story short I thought "why not do this myself"?

Here is what I have so far, the Main Instrument Panel(MIP)and MIP Housing for a P-51B mustang.
compare to a photo of an actual P-51B

I've been drawing them from the original engineering drawings and found that I really enjoy the process. I also have the original engineer drawings of the P-51D, BF-109 series, and FW-190 series. In order to help finance my own pit I thought I would see if there was a market for this kind of thing. My current file format is a 1:1 scale PDF. I plan on having the local office max/kinkos/etc. print off a set. Not sure right now if I'd sell the PDFs or a physical print.

I'm interested to see what you guys think of my work and if you think there is a market for it. Thanks.

Very nice work! Not sure if there is a big market for it but I'm sure some guys would appreciate skipping that step and paying you for the plans --- I know they do this of the F-16 pit. However, the best price is always FREE. biggrin But I do understand the need for financing this great hobby wink

They look fantastic, and speaking as a fellow prop head, I agree that there is a shortage of resource materials out there for us. I would be the last person to suggest that you make this work of yours free, however, My interest would be in a Spifire and I'm not sure where my price point would be. I wish you the best of luck though.

For any chance you have some drawings of a p51d throttle and the trim/flaps pedestal ;-) Im thinking of a p51 version of that all metal spitfire control set.......

Just to make sure you are interested in this portion of the cockpit, correct?

I'll see what I can find.

What interest would there be in a "sort of scale" Spitfire cockpit? Something that had the general shape & features and let you fill out the details as you like...

I"m not really looking to build a 'high fidelity' spitfire simpit. What I'm really looking for is the instrument panel relation so that I can make a template to place over my second monitor I plan on using in my 'generic' simpit for when I"m flying my squad missions (we fly spits).

I've got those. They are great. However they can be a bit tedious to look through to find the parts that you need. Also as they are photos of microfilm you can't just take them, print them, and have a 1:1 scale overlay without adjusting the photos. I figured my overlays/stencils would offer an excellent solution to those just interested in the parts they need for a sim pit and at a price point decidedly south of $140+.

Here is a shot of my most recent parts compiled to fit on a standard 36x48in. ARCH-E sized 'blueprint' page. I have added the Armament control switches, the pilot's front switch box, the right side fuse box/lighting controls, the trim pedestal, and the throttle minus levers.

That would be cool broken out as DWG files. biggrin

DWG would be excellent, though that isn't an option with the free version of google sketchup and the pro version is roughly $500. I suppose the perk of the DWG file would be the ability to have a CNC router cut the parts...

Does it export to an AutoCAD compatible format, like DXF or another file type?

SketchUp makes my head hurt. smile If I WAS going to use SU and wanted to keep the workflow using free tools, I'd do the part drawings in DraftSight and then save them as DXF files for importing into SU. (http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=114366)

You can download DraftSight from http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/free-cad-software/ - you have to "activate" it by entering your email address, "industry" and country. That's all there is to it. It can write and read the latest edition of AutoCAD DWG and DXF files (2010) and can save versions as early as Release 12 (WAAAAY back in the 90's!) of AutoCAD. I would _highly_ recommend it to anyone that wants a professional class tool for zero money.

If you're a college student (or have easy access to one) you could also buy Building Design Suite Ultimate 2013 Student for $150 which gets you a perpetual license to all the 2013 editions of AutoDesk products, including Inventor 2013 and AutoCAD 2013. If it was ME, I'd go this route, but I'm already an Inventor user and know how to use it. (At this point I have to plug the company that I bought my training material from, TEDCF Publishing - http://www.trainingtutorial.com. They make an excellent product. I purchased the Inventor 10 series back in 2007.)

If you want a good, free parametric modeling tool, AutoDesk's 123D is an excellent choice - the only problem I have with it is that it currently doesn't have the ability to export to DXF/DWG nor import from there. It can however generate "laser sheets" that can be used for working with flat patterns. You'll have to check into it for more details on how that works.

As was pointed out above DXF import is not available except in the paid $500 version of SketchUp. I'd also take a look at Alibre Personal Edition. It's full parametric and only costs $200.

I ran across this link on the DCS forums:
P-51 pit building resources pretty much the Mecca for anyone interested in Mustang parts and pieces.

Gene, looks like someone has beaten me to it and posted the main instrument panels in DXF format. Though when I zoom in close I'm guessing they were also originally done in Sketchup as the 'circles' are really 24 sided polygons. Perhaps cleaning them up in draftsight would yield better results for a CNC build. On my sketchup drawings I've upped the number of sides to the 'circles' in order to make them much more circular.

I suppose if I'd run across these earlier it could have saved me a lot of time, though I will admit I think I am enjoying the journey just as much as I will the future destination.

If you want to export to DXF using the free version of SketchUp, you can use this script:
http://www.guitar-list.com/download-software/convert-sketchup-skp-files-dxf-or-stl

The lack of true circles in SketchUp can be a pain in the butt, but what you can do is locate the center of each circle and then just delete the polyline and replace it with a true circle in CAD.

Anything that results in you learning something new is always worth doing!

Its worse with converting to 3D as the feature has to use a closed sketch smile

Work has been a little slow as of late but here is what I have so far for the throttle. I simplified things a bit to make it easier to build for my pit. PM me and I'll send you a copy of the PDF with measurements etc.
