Yes Bill, that is the magazine release. I wanted the Model 1928 because it can use both stick and drum magazines. The later models couldn't use drums. Also the 1928 had the Cutts compensator on the barrel to help against muzzle rise. It also was the last to have the cooling finned barrel and vertical front handgrip. All these were dropped in the later models because of manufacturing costs and military desire for simplicity.
Max, I haven't shot it yet so can't give you info on things. But if you took say 650 rounds per minute you would empty the 50 round drum in about 5 seconds. But using proper burst control you would probably triple that. I guess I will find out. I will also find out about reliability. They are still making drums and sticks so availability is no problem. Actually since Auto Ordnance is making semi-auto Thompsons all part availability is good for such an old item. Only the actual full auto parts may have any scarcity.
I have a 22LR conversion kit for it, so that will be cheaper than 45 all the time. I will post pictures of that kit when I get home tonight.
