Reminds me of us doing the "first SimHQ BBQ gathering"! Back in 2002, we had members from BC and Washington State gather at Vancouver International (CYVR)...
James Mackenzie Smith, his brother, Snapdad2112, Tom Cofield, Bubba Zanetti, myself, and a few others whose names escape me now. Had lunch/BBQ, watching the planes on short final (right overhead), and betting when that would be banned by airport authorities (I think this was only 9 months or so after 9/11).
After that, we went to race Karts at an indoor facility, quite decent, the cars were matched well, lap times recorded to 100th/second, and we raced! After that, we went to a peeler bar (that isn't anymore), where we debated how many rivets are on a Harrier's wings, in between dances and ordering beer!
We had fun that night, and for two or three more years, we tried to make another...but simply figuring a day where most of us could could participate was impossible. Even getting a date where 50% could show was impossible, as careers schedules and activities threatened our fun.
A few years ago I met up with Fast Cargo, at the same airport, that was fun! But instead of trying to figure out a date where everyone globally could participate, you could do two things: small regional gatherings on mutually agreed upon day, and the other being a global gathering at a fixed time chosen a year in advance, so that people could book time off from work or uni, make arrangements.
Maybe the global gathering might be at Oshkosh, or maybe during an open house day at Norfolk navy base? Or maybe a race, like Silverston?
