i have my boss's dead laptop to attempt to fix.

the power light works and when i push the start button you can hear a fan, or maybe the hard drive spinning.

there is no display on the screen and there are no further sounds coming from it, other than the spinning sound.

the only thing i believe i could check is to take the hard drive out and put it in another computer to see if it is working.

i have built my own desktop computers, but have never taken a laptop apart.

does this sound like a good thing to check, and is that the way to check the drive?

Hey Kramer sounds like a good start.. You should be able to access the Laptops HDD from the back of the case.. there might be a little door to open to get access to the drive to be able to take it out..

so you should might not have to tear it apart..

mine did a similar thing, i opened it up, but be extra careful upon opening up the laptop theres all kinds of ribbon cords and stuff.

Basically as it turned out all that had happened my end was when i had dropped my laptop the CPU had become loose so a quick tweak and it was working again, but yeah test the hard drive.

Is it a Toshiba by chance. My son's died a few months ago and it did the same as your boss's. I took the drive out and am using it in another laptop.

yes, a Toshiba Satelite P105-S6104.

the hard drive was easy to remove.

it is a Serial ATA drive.

i have an external hard drive enclosure that i can put it in to check it.

do you think the spinning noise was a cooling fan or the hard drive?

Heat Shut off (if heatsink or fan is reporting error to CMOS)
Power Shut off (if mAmp from the battery has degraded enough the system will not be able to power on.)

my Windows 7 computer sees the laptop's hard drive, i can open the files on it etc.

so i guess it isn't the hard drive causing the failure to start.

i just had the AC cord hooked up and it won't start. the battery charging light is on.

his only description of what happened is that the computer just suddenly shut down, the screen went blank.

i don't know if he was running on the battery or the AC.
