Quote:
There's something intrinsically satisfying about stepping down on the gas and hearing a car's engine rev up in response. But modern electric cars operate in silence, with no fuel-injection engine to make the noise we're used too.

Not only does that leave drivers feeling unsatisfied, it also creates a risk to pedestrian safety. Without the sound of a car approaching, there's more risk of accidents. Audi has a solution for its line of electric cars, by adding a synthetic sound. Listen to that engine purr.

I've been saying this for years. Electric cars should have a noise generator, because people are not used to having silent cars.

And just wait until it becomes possible to choose the sound you want for your car like you do with ringtones today.

This was a major point in a recent movie plot.... Kevin James, Vince Vaughn. I'm about to head out the door otherwise I'd look it up... But the sound of the VTEC system engaging in a Honda motor is one of my favorite sounds in the world.

If I ever get an electric car, I want a noise generator which puts out the sound of a R&R Merlin engine.

It's already being done in RC Planes, so it would be pretty easy in a car.

Meanwhile the folks at SimBin are wondering if Audi means "take sound files from GTR Legends" when saying "develop."

Exactly what I was thinking. Just an impeller within a vented chamber would produce a "real" sound. Much like those "sleep machine" white noise systems.

Sound Racer -- It makes the cabin of your daily driver sound like a V8, V10 or V12. smile
