GUI/ME is already "free", since you can download without purchase, and you are not requested to activate until you start the simulation proper. You can use the ME to your heart's content without even having an account on digitalcombatsimulator.com, much less paying for it. (Sure, you can't play-test your missions, but that's another thing.)

Something I didn't realize. Does ED market it this way? It seems an unintended feature more than something that is designed to be so. What I mean more than a many GB demo and having to cancel when it asks for the CD key but more a ME and basic 3D environment without the ability to play as the pilot. The textures would be very low res stand-ins for fast load; just enough so you can test AI flights and see relative geometries.

You raise an interesting point - I wonder if they'd consider it.

I made this suggestion to them about 1 year ago, and heard nothing but excuses as to why it couldn't be done. Glad someone over there finally figured it out.

It was impossible for them to ignore your genius any longer.

I agree 100% Nate, but thanks for pointing it out. lol

I don't think there's any marketing on that point, so "unintended feature" is probably a good description on it. The whole thing with it being possible to download without an account is probably a case of "keep it simple stupid" - there is less risk of paying customers being hindered by a technical problem if there is no check for having paid at all. But I don't know for sure whether that is the motivation.
