Again, I'll ask how we can be beating a dead horse when the content is currently evolving? It is a serious question.

Josh Howard isn't killing the genre. He killed it, as in past tense.

I don't think so. Someone out there has a good flying game in them just waiting to be fleshed out in reality. Take On Helicopters is a good example of that.. If TOH had the Microsoft name over the title it would have been a much, much bigger hit I think.

AeroflyFS is also a noteworthy title. I think it's much more limited in scope than we're used to seeing, but the quality of the product is amazing.

We need the icon that shows a poor horse suffering but the beating is of the clueless marketing cowboy riding it...

For those of us who feel sorry for the horse, know it is being ridden poorly to death by the slick cowboy, but still hope at some point the silly cowboy will go back to playing with Ants and let someone else train the horse into the potential champion race horse it could be.

Killing the genre?

Last time I checked the genre seemed pretty alive to me. Black Shark 2, DCS A-10C, X-plane 10, Aerofly FS, Take on Helicopters, Strike Fighters NA, War Thunder, Falcon 4 BMS, Condor Soaring, Rise of Flight, Combat Helo soon... Hey. I even have some decent flightsims on my phone.

We never had so much choice since the late 90's! It actually feels like a new golden age if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong. I disagree with the direction they are currently taking the project, but at the same time I think it's going to be interesting watching how it evolves over the years.

If you don't like it, It's Ok. It's not a game for you. There are a lot of fantastic alternatives out there. But they are certainly not killing the genre smile

Well Capt, I look at it this way...

Even yet, MS is the big dog, the 800 lb gorilla, the main player... certainly not the alpha and omega of simming but it's the one that the majority know of and/or follow.

All those other titles are fringy, and I do not say that with any disrespect... they just don't pull the numbers that FS has over the course of time. AMny of those are in their infancy so they may grow over time... we'll see.

Yes, I hope somebody else picks up the gauntlet but for the genre to live on strong it needs to be somebody with a bit of gravitas or one helluva hit.

Well, the "beating the horse" icon I used was more directed toward the specific comments about the Zero. Both the lack of a cockpit and the fact that it's a Zero over Hawaii have been discussed in a 6 page thread here at SimHQ. So in this case my use of the icon was more directed at the fact that a new thread was started to restate something that's already been discussed at length a few threads down.

Regarding the title of this thread - These kinds of over reactions are getting old. Regardless of whether you love Flight or thinks is't the worst piece of crap to ever grace a computer hard drive, it's not killing flight sims. WoP didn't kill flight sims. HAWX didn't kill flight sims. Ace Combat didn't kill flight sims. Strike Fighters 2 didn't kill flight sims. Wirlwind Over Vietnam didn't kill flight sims. And niether will Flight.

So, Beach, to answer your question:
1 - You're right. Flight is still new and still evolving and can/should be discussed. Discussing Flight and/or discussing new releases as the come out is not beating a dead horse. Wrong or confusing use of the "beating dead horse" icon on my part.
2 - Threads and posts with statements like "Flight is killing flight sims" or "Flight is crap" or "I uninstalled after 4.3 seconds" or "Flight stole my car, caused my wife to leave me, and made my dog runaway" are pointless (and startign to get repetative) when they aren't backed up by any further explanation of how or why Flight is causing those things.

I have been defending Flight here every now and then because I actually like it. Not because FSX is too complex for me, and not because I'm a console noob who uses an xbox gamepad, but because I'm limited on time these days and Flight can get me into a mission/job quickly with no planning on my part. Sure, Flight needs a few more scenery areas and a few more planes (along with some improvements to missions and gameplay) to ensure that I don't get bored. But I haven't seen anything that indicates that won't happen (also nothing to indicate that it certainly will...). I'd rather discuss/ask questions about Flight here at SimHQ than have have to go somewhere else. But it seems like the "positive" (for lack of a better term...) threads about Flight seem to get burried quickly by threads calling for Josh Howards head.

...the amount of threads with "Flight sucks!" content. It's getting really annoying.

So here's a proposition: I refrain from posting if everyone moves on and stops complaining about things (=Flight) they can't change anyway. Deal?
