From what I read a while ago, this seemed like another angst tween franchise. However, the reviews are already coming in and there seems to be almost unanimous praise for it.

I confess I have not read the books (should I?). Is this really worth it?

The books are really good and well worth a read. My only issue with them is the ending, but I obviously can't tell you about that. smile

OK... so I might half love it and half hate it with a vengeance.

Have you read the books PM? In my experience, the Twilight comparison is usually made by people who haven't.

I heard about the books ages ago and thought the story sounded quite good. No idea if they are aimed at kids or not but looking at the trailers they have 'Twilighted' it unfortunately.

No I haven't read the books but the trailer definitely gave me that teenage angst vibe. The movie is certainly being marketed to the Twilight crowd though.

The books were really good. I was halfway through the first one when my wife told me it was from the Teen section at the book store. Otherwise I wouldn't have known.

I read and really enjoyed the books.

I hope they haven't "twilighted" the relationships as the relationships provide one of the most interesting insights into the main protagonist's character (and it ain't all pretty). If they tried to make her have a straight romance (with either main male character, or a stupid Jacob/Edward type deal) they'll have inevitably compromised an essential insight into who Katniss is.

Given how much money the Twilight series has made, I'm a little afraid that the incentive to "make a few minor tweaks" and cutessify the relationships will win out... we'll see.

Tried to keep that vague enough to avoid spoiling it.
