Greetings all, new to RoF and GREATLY enjoying the sim thus far!

A question though...

Im a bit overwhelmed with all the DLC avalaible, so I ask you this: If you (as vets to the sim) were to reinstall the game fresh knowing what you know now what would be some of the first mods/payware/etc you would make SURE to grab?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know what you have already, but if you haven't bought it already you should head over to fspilotshop.com and pick up the Iron Cross edition for $10. That's a lot of gaming for $10 and should be a great start.

That's all I have so far (only 2 weeks into this fine sim). I definitely will be picking up the Channel map when it comes out.

Also, if you're going to buy DLC planes, they seem to come with a discount the more you buy, so I'd buy in bulk if at all possible.

Pretty much everything said above is very true, the iron cross edition will square you away from multiplayer (for the most part).

Before I go on, I will say this with as much seriousness as I can muster.

Make sure you play with full realism, it will pay to make sure you can fly the aircraft at it's full potential and not with all the handicaps turned on (most online servers are full realism). It will be very hard to adjust to at first, but when you finally get how to do engine management, navigation and target identification without the aid of icons and such, well, you will find the sim a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

okay, on to your questions!

Get the iron cross edition because it will help you understand the roles each aircraft do and allow you to make a more informed choice on later aircraft purchases (and you will purchase more, I have them all myself). Be prepared to dump a significant amount of money into this sim but always be sure to buy in bulk if you can (you can save A LOT if you buy in bulk!)

I would suggest that you buy the DFW and R.E.8 two seaters for online play, they are common in the servers and offer the ability to do more specific things (bombing, recon) that can earn nice points for your side. The Bristol is another great two seater (the best in my opinion) but it is considered "controversial" and "over-modeled" by some in the multiplayer community, so it is not common on the servers, but it really is a amazing aircraft.

Make sure to get field mods for your aircraft, some folks will say you don't need them but try to fly the Sopwith dolphin, Fokker DVII(F), Fokker DVIII or the S.E.5a without decent sights (or sights of any kind!) and then we will talk. some other aircraft need the field mods to be effective without navigation aids like the Nieuport 11, 17 and others that don't come with a compass. Overall, try to get the field mods for any aircraft you fly unless you know that you do not need them.

Mod, you don't need to worry about mods that much, there is a mod package you can download that offers superior AI, reduced gunner accuracy (for realism) and other things that you can find if you ask for it on the ROF main page forums, there is also a campaign generator that works offline and some even say it is much better than the beta career in the game itself (I have not messed with them enough to say myself).

I hope this covered some bases, if you have any other questions, please ask away!

If you're a single player type I'd get the ROF ICE DVD and Vander's very nice St Mihel campaign.

The ROF ICE DVD gets you the planes you need for Vander's campaign and a few extra.

After grabbing ICE, you'll also want:

D.VIIF
Nieuport 17
Albatros D.III

And maybe a two seater.

I thought the N.17 came with ICE, perhaps you mean the Nieuport 11?

Still a great bit of advise, the D.VIIF is a mean bird.

I'm semi new as well, so I'm going to jump into this thread...

I'm currently trying to get the feel of my joystick controls while taking the training missions under the campaign section.

My plan is, once I've finished all the training missions (still stuck on 3, I can't seem to pull out of the spin completely, but I'm getting closer each time) to start a career flying the SE5a.

However, eventually I'd like to play multiplayer. My original plan was to know 1 or 2 planes inside and out and fly them exclusively. However after reading this thread I have my doubts... how exactly do multiplayer games work? Are they deathmatch games? How is it ESSENTIAL that I need more than a few planes to play multiplayer?

Also, anyone know of a mod that adds the Red Baron 2 shell music to the game? biggrin

You will probably want to learn as many planes as you can (or own), just so you are able to adapt to changing battle conditions and the various selections that each mission provides online.

You should get the planes you want, but I suspect that before long you will end up with all of them, it is addicting to learn a new aircraft in this sim but you are bound to develop a love for your favorite one or two aircraft, mine are the DR-1 and the Nieuport 11.

Multiplayer games can have various objectives (destroying targets, recon, etc) or just be a straight team vs. team dogfight, they even have a capture the flag mode that really is fun.

I know of no way to add Red Baron 2 music to the sim, it is not really possible as far as I know.

Welcome back Tobias,

Most are "deathmatch, yes. But that doesnt always mean "fly to location X and start furball". Most TDM games are objective based, and are won by the team who completes them first.

Then there are also CTF game, which are mostly "furballs near flags". But they are great for honing skills and getting some nav practice in.

Finally, there are co-op games; which take a bit more patience to start (all pilots start at same time and no joining mid-game)

And in all three game modes - it can be human vs human or human vs AI or a combination of both.

"Essential" in this context probably means something closer to "popularity". Or at least how common these types are in the Multiplayer environment - combined with their ease of flying and ability to "do well" in. No you certainly do NOT need every essential plane listed....but if you are trying to decide "which ones first", as the OP was - then it is a helpful guide.

Hope this helps!

S!
