At worst the release of this film will cause the instant destruction of the entire universe. At best the release of this film will cause the arrival of eternal bliss for all in the universe.
I have the feeling the reaction will be close to the middle between those 2 extremes.

i keep thinking that the reviews are gonna be bad, and the host of the TV Show will have the Jim Carey "You Sunk My Battleship!" from Batman Forever queued up and plays it every time he lists something wrong with the movie.

You mock me but I have neither the time or the patience to make the trip to the movie theatre to see a movie that I have a mild curiosity about. That's what Netflix is for.

I remember playing Battleship as a kid. The thing that really struck me was the lack of space aliens in what would otherwise have been a realistic naval warfare environment. Knowing what kind of incredulous reactions my analysis would have gotten, I kept my opinion to myself.
Reminds me of when I played Operation and that stupid buzzing vibrator went off if I touched the metal edges with my surgical instruments. I kept thinking, what if this dude's chest opened like a big mouth with teeth and bit both my hands off at the elbows.
Back when all my friends were playing Dungeons-n-Dragons I kept thinking, wouldn't it be cool if we ordered a pizza and met an extra-terrestrial botanist who got left behind by his exploratory group.
I won't bore you guys with the time I was playing Hungry Hungry Hippos because you can probably make the leap to Hunger Games yourselves, but as you can see I was a visionary.

Went to see it the other night with the GF. I warned her this was going to be the worst movie ever made. I didn't know how right I was. They used every cliché in the book and added the same "recruitement poster" flavour from transformers. Really, really bad. Everyone in the room started laughing when they reactivated the Missouri. Not only is reactivating the Missouri scenaristically very far fetched, the scene itself has the old Battleship's tonnage worth of cheese in it. Awful...
That said the CGI wasn't bad, and if you can manage to turn off your brain and sneak in the shipping crate of salt you'll need to take the movie with not to leave the theatre halfway through, it's quite pleasing on the eyes...
Half a thumb up for the soundtrack though (except for the very last song, which is just another cliché) and for the one scene where they create the link with the Hasbro game. That one was pretty well done... Well, it wasn't half as bad as the others...
Cheers
Nico

Thanks for the review vonBarb. This film was quite obviously just a big paycheck for Liam Neeson and nothing more.

Get the old girl ready to roll and kick some cylon, er, alien ass! Maybe they took a note from BSG, where one of the launch bays was a gift shop and not launch capable in the beginning. They even used Vipers from the museum to get in the fight.

Nico I sneaked out and saw it today. Von Barb nailed it, every cliche in the book. The injured vet (not an actor) back in action was over the top, but dammit you accept and like it since the guy really does seem to be a vet they got for the role. You can't really spoil the plot, since it's got all the highly complex plot of a Battleship game. LOL Game elements ALL OVER the place, which was kind of funny to see them work in. Take the glossed over alien motivation and shallow character development of Independence Day, the talented-with-great potential-but-good-for-nothing Kirk from the last Star Trek, the very satisfying metal ripping fight scenes from Transformers...throw some Top Gun in there (soccer instead of volleyball)...mix well and pour into a sippee cup. That said, it was a fun flick after they got beyond the loser you know will rise to the occasion thing. A little Friday Night Lights reunion there too, practically playing the same characters. The action was really good though, and fun watching the ships etc. Watching the ships fire to take out the incoming projectiles (in the shape of Battleship game pegs, of course) was cool. The pegs plug in just like a ship in the game. LOL In a cheesy, but also brilliant move, having the modern crew have to recruit the WWII Navy vets to help run the ship was a fun scene. I got to hear the ship battle on the theater sound system, so I'd say mission accomplished. This is not a date movie. This is not a movie to pay much to see. This IS a good flick to see things blow up very nicely when in the mood. It's a "military appreciation sci fi flick", if that makes sense. Might go pretty well with a bucket of beers for the at-home viewing later on. I'm sure it will be on blu-ray very soon. LOL

Well, what's truly sad is that "Battleship's" extremely poor opening weekend proved that even the cineplex masses didn't really care for this type of mindless, leave your brain at the door entertainment. I think "The Avengers" has pretty much proven that you can have lots of action, lots of fancy CGI effects AND also have an interesting story and memorable characters. It seems "Battleship" only had the first 2 elements.

I went into it not expecting much at all. I expected it to be worse than Battle for LA. I came away entertained and thought it was better than Battle for LA. 3/5 stars for me.
As I told my friend - If you have nothing to do just go into it with a bag of popcorn and enjoy it for what it is. I told him at the time Battle for LA came out "dont bother."

Coming soon to a Theater Near You... In explosive 3D heart stopping action: TIC TAC TOE - THE MOVIE. When the Human Race is only one X from eXtinction, a ragtag bunch must come together and unlock the Mysterious O to block the rampaging Aliens-From-Another-Planet-In-The-Future from their conquest. Not to be confused with The Story of O or the "O-Face" from Office Space, or the X-Men, though the working titles considered for this film were "The O-Men" (not to be confused with THE OMEN) and XXX (not to be confused with the OTHER movie of the same name).

I might put it on par with Battle for LA, since I did find a few redeeming qualities about how it (BoLA) was presented. I'd rather watch Battleship again, of the two though. Just fast forward the first 30 45 minutes.

Just out of curiosity, to what degree are people aware that the "game of Battleship" existed for some 60 years (minimum) prior to the marketing of the plastic toy version, and was played by schoolboys wherever graph paper, or even lined paper, or in a pinch plain paper and a ruler, and a couple of pencils were available? I have no idea how widespread it was, nor over what geographic distribution, or how far it crossed language barriers, but I know I was introduced to it so young I have no memory of it. It may have been before I learned to read...

I saw it the other day too. I enjoyed it after disconnecting my brain, lol. My son hated it, not even the cute blond made it any better for him, lol.I already expected it to suck so I had no illusions. CGI was great, a couple lines from the scientist was funny. I will pick it up on Blueray after it hits the close out bin in Wally world :P

I played "that version" in school. That would be over fourty years ago.

I saw the movie.
I must say - contrary to most of the reviews here, it vastly exceeded my expectations. At least where humans weren't concerned.
The movie is actually an extension of the genre of Cpld War science fiction that involved military based first contact stand-offs. The scenario is actually quite different from what one might expect: - Civilians are killed by the Aliens, but only as collateral damage (with the exception of some grad students) - The Aliens use proportional force (with a few pre-emptive strikes), which means that there is a gradual escalation in violence that gives the humans a chance to respond - The Alien combat is largely a result of the loss of command and communication assets (which puts the alien expeditionary force on the offensive) - It is also shows Japanese and American forces cooperating, defering and hybridising command structures
So, all in all, much better than I expected.

Good grief! I tried to watch this last night. In the end I just skipped through it to the action scenes.Even then I had to skip most of them. At one point I half expected the Missouri to get out the water and fly. Bloody awful I thought. That's just my opinion though.

That will be in the sequel. The Missouri will fly off into space and join forces with the Yamato.

It's open for a sequel! They did the Marvel movie thing after the credits. They mentioned in the first of the movie that other parts of the world were affected, Scotland, France, Germany, clearly Hong Kong and Iowa (or was it Idaho?).
In retrospect I liked the movie more and more and looked forward to the blu-ray release. We've already watched it twice since it came out the other day. Just a good natured, fun, scifi action movie. Actually enjoyed it more at home than the first time, and even the kids loved it.

I think it safe to say both Doom and Battleship performed poorly enough that we will not be at risk of such things.
Unless it's an SFC schlock-of-the-week production, of course. But then it won't be the same, really, it will be an imitation that is equally as bad, that's all.

Maybe I missed something but I don't get the aliens.
***SPOILER ALERT*** - as if this film could get spoiled.
They can only see in green and threats and objectives are red. But aren't they here to invade us? Then every human would be a threat - why'd they leave some alive, especially that scientist that went back into their supposed secure zone to get his gizmo. I can understand them not killing kids as the young are probably a universal thing (even stars are young).. unless they had the same mentality as us v insects.
Also it was clear that the first engagement was purely reactionary and because of miscommunication. We had 3 battleships lined, they matched our 3. We sounded a warning horn, they sounded a bigger horn. We fired a warning shot, they fired a warning shot - and it was obvious a warning shot because they could have easily peppered our ships...which they eventually did, only after we opened fire full bore.
Even their actions of rescuing their comrade was purely reactionary and very passive.
It seemed like that they were probably a scout party but without hostile intentions. They took out the highway and military response to secure their comms... pretty reasonable actions.
I didn't mind it so much because I knew what I was getting into but the story could have been done a lot better to make the film more engaging.
