Hi everybody,

It's time to build a new rig. I know I can do the labor, just would like some input on the parts side of things. Need to add an optical drive though.

Wish me luck!!!!!

Very nice highest-end rig smile

I recently got a $140 (today's price) OCZ 850W Gold PSU for $80 at Newegg (various sales added up). What I've always found is that, if one is flexible, one can find a sale priced 650 to 850W high-end PSU cheap (say $60 to $90 -- only kind I buy). A single card system does not really need more than 750W -- and 650 will normally do it (but get 750+ for margin). If you could find a PSU on sale, you could apply the savings to the GPU and "step up" to a GTX680 at $500 (when they come back in stock). At the end of the day, the GPU is the most important component to a gamer (the CPU is second -- you have that covered). All depends on how many days or weeks you can afford to shop sales before you need to "pull the trigger".

Also, for a pure gaming rig, the 2500K will do the job (some games actually slow down when hyper threading on the 2700K is active). While, its no big deal, its another chance to save $100 towards the GTX680.

Just opinions that assume you are buying the 580 based on price -- not that you're buying it because its all that's available right now.

Great build, I have a similar one (HAF932, Corsair 850TX), would echo Allen's comment about 2500k if you only need it for gaming, 2600k or 2700k hyperthreading benefits only apps like video editing or transcoding.

Also as mentioned unless the 580 is < $400, then 680 is probably better choice at $499 as 580 will be dropping in price consistently from here on out.

TGFan - those full towers can be pretty big. I prefer the small mid-towers like the CM Storm Scout, but one must be careful to get a video card that will fit - under 11" long.
Storm Scout

Regardless, look at the GTX 680 - I think, at EVGA anyway, there is just one model and it is 10" long.

Nice rig!

Thanks for all of your advice. I'm going to check it all out ASAP. Ive been browsing the screenshot boards here and I couldn't wait any longer for a new computer. Thanks again for the input.

Nice! I couldn't justify more than double the cost for the Intel cpu route, but if you've got the bucks to blow, might as well.
Don't forget a 2nd hard drive for your backup image etc. Go budget on that.
Bought an Asus blu-ray drive the other day on Newegg for about $55, good enough since I'll rarely use it. Not a blu-ray burner though:

Here's a nice OCZ 750W at 40C, Single-Rail PSU -- $75 at Newegg today. I have OCZ and am satisfied. Like I wrote above, I'd rather put the money towards a higher end GPU (or two). I'm sure there will be more sales like this.
