Just shot down Berthold while flying my trusty SE-5. He was flying his blue Pfalz DIIIA and I was able to keep my speed and altitude AND hit him pretty hard on my first diving pass.

Hate to say it but it was pretty easy after that-his bird was leaking fuel and belching black puffs of smoke after the first run and there wasn't alot of aerobatic action so I may have hit him as well. After a couple more bursts he lost his wings on the starboard side.

This is the first named ace I've met after all this time and I mean LOTS of time! cheers

That's awesome, Copter!! I've yet to come across any famous aces in any of my careers, though it's been confirmed in an earlier post that yes, they are in the Beta Career, you just can't fly with them... Ah, to be able to fly next to the greats such as Boelke, Immelman, Richthofen, Mannock, Bishop, Richenbacker, and the rest...

Congrats anyway on the kill!! Hope you have more worthy of posting! thumbsup

Well done Copter, I've yet to see such a thing. Was he flying in his own colours or just a name on a standard paint scheme ?

I remember one of the Dev shots in the early phases of RoF (when Gennadich were the devs) of Jasta 11 DR1's all parked up and in Ace colours.
I'd love to see that in the CareerB
More Aces in their paint schemes and more aircraft in a flight, whole Jastas/squadrons for some sorties rather than the 3-4 we normally get.

I'd love that

I would love this too. Another thing I would love to see is more Offensive Patrols from the other side. I'm playing a Jasta 11 career, among others, in the fall of 1916. I'm re-reading an old book that my dad bought when he was in 8th grade called Iron Men With Wooden Wings, and it goes into detail about how the French scout pilots would fly deep over enemy lines, most of them by themselves, and the British would sometimes do this as well. All I see whenever I take off is a single RE8 over our lines. No scouts, just a lone two-seater. Yet we (Jasta 11) are flying Offensive Patrols in Albatroses almost every day. Where's the enemy's offensive spirit?

But back to the topic at hand, I'd love to see some famous aces come across our lines. Maybe we're too far north (based at Douai) to see the likes of Nungesser, Guynemer, or Lufbery over our lines, but Major L.G. Hawker is just right across the way in No.29 Squadron. Hopefully, I might have a chance to see him soon.

Berthold was in his blue fuse. bird with the white markings on the side. I'm on the road away from the sim but I believe his skin is one that's avaiable in ROF. Can't remember what the white markings are---a swan or some other bird?

I was just on his side of the lines and had shot down a DFW that was fairly high so I hadn't lost alot of altitude. As soon as I set the DFW alight, I started climbing and turned back towards my line. As I approached the German side of the line I spotted a lone aircaft approaching me from the middle of No Mans Land, heading back towards the German lines. He appeared to be about a 1000 feet below me as I dove on him. I fired as I passed over him and used my speed to climb back up when I identified the aircraft as a Pfalz DIII.

After getting some separation and altitude, I turned back to re-engage and saw fuel and puffs of black smoke coming from the aircraft. It was fairly easy to close and stay above the aircraft as it appeared to be damaged pretty badly. I also wondered if I'd hit the pilot as the aircraft never made more than 30 degree banks even while I was shooting at it.

After a couple more bursts, the upper right wing failed and the lower wing went right after it. The aircraft came down in the trenches on the German side of the lines. I'd shot down two DFW's before engaging Berthold but have to admit I'd all but forgotten them until I saw the mission de-brief!

When highlighting the aircraft info after the end of the mission, it just said Berthold with no rank shown.

I too would really like to see the career mode fleshed out more. I definitely would love to see a lot more planes in the air during missions! I know they have made some tweaks to the career since it's first beta, but I'm hoping they can give it more focus in the future. I would suspect since the career mode doesn't really generate revenue, it gets a backseat to new planes. I have taken a break from ROF career for awhile and went back to First Eagles 2's dynamic campaign for a bit. Definitely "sim-lite" compared to ROF but you get surprised with enemy patrols in your airspace when your taking off ocassionally and a lot of planes in the air in general. Hoping ROF does something similar in the future!

I'm flying Pat Wilsons CG and I'm flying in No56 with mr Ball and mr Rhys Davis and yes I will know I will somedays encounter some German top aces, maybe Voss!
When flying an early jasta campaign I did encounter Ball while flying his N17, I could not get him he was better so I did broke up and get my Alby a quick ride home.

Strange that this Beta career is still using 100% fantasy pilot names in your squadron and can not get to the same level as the RB3d/OFF3 campaign.

Lets hope they will do the upgrade, for a campaign mode on OFF3/RB3d level and containing some historic real pilot names in your flight, I would gladly pay for.
