wonder if this will lead the way to "if you have both Arma3 and Arma2:CO installed you can use the Arma2 content in Arma3" ?

That would seem like the direction they're going. I'm really starting to want to get Take on Helicopters. Just need a little tiny sale to come along...

The backwards compatibility in the ArmA games is really impressive, but it sure does make for a mess of legacy stuff on the scripting and modding side. Still, I'd rather have it than not.
