The first real 3D radar of the WarPact.
Also the main target acquisition radar of the S-300PMU (SA-10B) system.

If you would launch from the SPU1, you would devastate your SNR...

There were basically two competing design from the two major air-to-ground missile design bureau, and as usual, both designs were fielded.

In 1981, the "Zvezda" design bureau fielded the Mach3, H-25MP (AS-10 Karen) missile with two exchangeable self guiding heads, one against the Nike Hercules, while the other against the Hawk SAM system.

This missile had a 90.6kg warhead, while it weighted 311 or 320kg depending on guidance head version.
The following planes could be armed with it: MiG-23BK, MiG-27M/K/D, Su-17M3/M4, Su-24M, Su-25, Jak-141, MiG-29M/K

H-25MP (AS-10 Karen) with MiG-27 during the Cold War...

Thanks! Now I get it. So the positions of the SPUs on the SA-4 are sort of like the SA-3's.

Any prove about they really used them in Georgia??? The hit on this "Flat Shield" could be from allmost everything... I don't believe those to be capable at least as AGM-88 is... yep

P.S. Jak-141 must be written Yak-141 (like in 5Ya23). wink

And there were earlier ARM designs:
KSR-11, carried by Tu-16 bombers (in service since 1962, range up to 170 km, 0,9-1,2 Mach, 684 kg warhead);
Kh-22P/Kh-22NP, carried by Tu-22M2/Tu-22M3 (5,5 tons launch weight, 350 km range, Mach 4,6), fielded in small numbers;
KSR-5P, carried by Tu-16 (since 1972, Mach 3, 300 km range);
Kh-28, the first tacical ARM (in service since 1974, 120 km range, speed 800 m/sec), carried by Su-17 and Su-24 before Kh-58 became available;
The first three could be equipped with either conventional or thermonuclear warheads.

The ARM's were certainly used there, although it is not clear what exactly took out that 36D6 "Tin Shield" (not "Flat Shield"), the damage seems to be too light for a powerful ARM warhead. The Su-34 bombers also saw their first combat there, employing their "Khibiny" ECM suites with great success, suppressing the Georgian SAMs completely. But at the beginning, Russian Air Force seemed to be surprised by the Georgian air defences, suffering surprisingly heavy losses. Only a few days later they realised that they not dealing with some insurgents in the mountains, but with well-trained and somewhat well-equipped opponent...

Article in Russian:
http://www.vko.ru/DesktopModules/Article...version=Staging

From what i've heard before (and also mentioned in that article as well) the Buk is highly vulnerable to jamming.

Vulnerability to jamming is highest weakness of most Soviet radars, especially those of fighter aircraft. During trials of Tu-95MS' jamming suite, it was able to completely suppress the mighty radar of MiG-31 interceptor, so it could not fire at all.
