I don't know if any of you have seen any of the trailers for the new Total War expansion, but here's one that shows a bit of both the land battles and naval engagements.



They are including some technology, such as trains for transport and self propelled torpedoes, which did exist---just not in Japan during the period depicted. Of course trains were in use in the rest of the world, and torpedoes were in experimental development by several nations, so I guess it's OK if it makes for a fun play experience.

The TW games have never been about absolute historical accuracy anyway, but only based on historical periods.

It looks like great fun, and I can't wait. It's scheduled for release on March 23rd.

Some of the land battles are rip-off of the movie The Last Samurai. Looks good though.
