I live in a swamp, basically. Mosquitos are HORRENDOUS May thru October. Anybody know something that works? I'm willing to spend a little cash. I've read som good reviews of THIS, but I'm always a sceptic when it comes to this stuff.

E=mc to the power of 2.

Work on this formula a bit and I am fairly confident it will lead to solving any problem you may to have!

Sorry Mate ... the best I could come up with at the time.

I've got a "mosquito magnet defender" in my back yard. I run it basically from May/June through August and it has taken a good chunk out of the mosquitoes here. The first two years I ran it the trap screen would be completely jam pack filled with hundreds of the little buggers. Last year there were barely any mosquitoes around the house at all, but it's hard to tell whether it was due to weather/environment or due to my mass genocide of the little bastards. They say that after a year or two it will have that effect because so many female mosquitoes are taken out of the breeding pool that whole populations will vanish.

It uses one bait stick and one 30lb propane tank per month, and it requires 120v plugin for the fan. ( comes with an power supply transformer with a very long cable I ran along the side of the patio )

I believe placement of the trap itself is very important. I put mine at the rear corner of the house where I used to see mosquitoes buzzing around all the time.

I put up 4wet bat houses several years ago and they cut down pn our mosquitoes a lot. Coupled with the yearly return of our chimney swifts the insects are not too annoying.

Nuke 'em from orbit. Its the only way to be sure...

@Clydewinder, good to know these devices can work. I think I'll do some more research.

@coasty, not many bats in my neighborhood anymore. The dragonflies have filled the niche, but I don't think they are as effective.
bathouses couldn't hurt though.

How about vegetable oil on all standing water? I'd think it'd work the same way as petroleum-based oil did back in the day, but without any adverse environmental effects.

I know the propane based traps work well.
I've got a bug zapper we put up sometimes. You put it off to the side to draw them off or it has the reverse effect. Doesn't really do a lot of good other than a slight sense of revenge.

If we're going to have people over and outside, about an hour before I use a hose lawn spray:

Don't believe that BS about 4 weeks, but it will get you a few hours though.
Otherwise, you really can't beat loose fitting clothing and a good brand of spray on repellant.

I'm curious about those little deals you snap onto your belt. The soccer fields near our house are horrible with all the rain we've had this year.

I've used the bacteria dunks in the small pond next to my house. I think most of the bugs are coming from the wet leaves and countless puddles in the woods.

I think that any oil has the same immediate environmental effects as petroleum. When the Costa Concordia went down, there was alot of concern about the amount of olive oil on board.

You live in a swamp, you're going to have mosquitoes - the end.

i'm also curious about how to stop mosquitos

i don't live in a swamp, i live in the middle of tokyo but the humidity is set to go extremely high here in the next few months and the mosquitoes are fierce.

i have a small shrub in the front of my apartment that i can't cut down (landlord) but it seems like the mosquitoes are primarily coming from there every summer.

any ideas on how to stop them? i can't use any extreme methods as there are cats and other people from the apartment building around. propane tanks etc are out.

have tried continuously lighting a mosquito candle which keeps them away, maybe, if the wind isn't too strong, but they come back as soon as the candle is out.

Ive got a friend that has the mist system that fumigates the yard every day or so and he has no problems. I dont quite have the money for that so I got a propane fogger and just nuke the yard 30min or so before I wanna go out and its good for a few hours.
