Hi Guys.

I have a problem running DOS applications on my WinXP SP3 setup.

Over the past few days it's been getting harder and harder to get the RSC program to run and create a result. I've been getting code 70 errors, or the program runs, I get a result, and then it CTD's, before writing the result.

I've rolled back my computer to last month, when I did not have this problem, to no avail. I've done a virus scan, no threats found. I run Spybot, killed loads of rubbish, but no change. Ran Reg cleaner, still no change.

As I can't run DOS applications, it's stopped all 3dz work. frown

HELP!

Have you got "DOSBox" I've found it quite handy to run old DOS applications and games.

Takes a little time to set up, but runs those old progs very well.

Yes Moggy, but I'm having trouble with the RSC program. I've managed to get it working in the root folder in C:, but it will not work via the 3dz Studio or in my working folder. Something has changed, but I'm at a loss to know what. frown

No choices John!

Before proceeding make sure that you have a "C:\RSC" folder with
Gurney's "RSC.exe" and the "RSC.bat" files inside it.

If there is a filename in the box at the top left of the screen then when
you click "Run Batch" a DOS box will appear. The RSC calculator will be
running but waiting for you to input the filename.

The filename is already stored in memory, so click the right button of
your mouse in the DOS box. A small drop-down menu will appear.
Select "Paste". The RSC calculator will process the file, and the
DOS box should close.

You can then view the report by clicking "Load and show the report".
The text you are reading now will be replaced by the report.

You can paste the correct RS table into the original file by clicking
"Read and paste RS". If this is done successfully a message will appear.

To exit click "Clean up and return". This window will close and your
previous window will be restored.
********************

That is how Gurney organised it and we are stuck with it I think.

Yes Tony, that works up to the paste the result, at which point I get a ctd. Now, that's not right. But, if I run the RSC in it's C: folder it will create a OUTPUT.3dz, which I have to convert, cut, and paste the result into the old way.

I recon something is wrong with my virtual DOS system. but I can't figure out what is wrong.

Things have got a whole lot worse.

My Registry is damaged, and I can't get any exe's to work to do a system restore.

Can someone tell me what is registered to the system restore to make it work. I'm going to have to manually repair the registry so I can get things working again.

Strangely IE8 is not effected, but almost everything else is dead.

Col.,
it is usually a virus that prevents exe's from working,
but I believe you can get to the system restore at boot-up.
If you know what the keystroke is to boot in safe-mode, I think
there is an option there that will allow either safe-mode or system restore.

For me, when in that situation, the restore will not work. so I have to start
in safe-mode, then run a proggy I have called ComboFix. (Free download.) It
cleans up everything very nice.

Thought maybe this might help,
AO

Hi AO.

I'm backing up everything on my big HD ready to format C: and start again.

I've tried to boot my Windows CD will not boot.

Safe Mode, almost nothing works. Every exe has lost it's connection to windows.

How IE8 is still running is a mystery to me, but I'm glad it is. I've got 140gig to backup, so it's going to take a while, before I can even format the drive, and start a fresh install. frown

Just noticed the problem.

IO, CONFIG and MSDOS.sys files are all empty, and I have a 2gig pagefile.sys file!

So, off I go to format C: and see you guys on the other side.

The worst part of this is going to be updating Windows, which is going to take hours!

Sounds to me like a virus has taken out those config files. I had that happen to me once. When I tried to delete the little sod manually it took out my windows config files. Luckily I could restore them from disk so it didn't require a complete reformat. That's bloody. Wish you well in the process and see you on the other side.
