It's an expensive toy, for sure, but now that prices are going to drop for the iPad2, I might spring for one, since I bought the awesome AniMoog app for 99 cents a while ago and have nothing to put it on. smile

We're at an interesting time for display tech. This stuff always impresses me

That's a bit harsh of it just being a toy - it's really a niche computer. The new video/photo editing stuff and iLife actually makes it closer to a proper role for a computer. I'd go with 'unessential frivolous luxury' smile

It fills the gap for 'casual web surfing / app playing' part of 'passive computing' that we didn't know a few years ago existed. Just like laptops have eaten into desktop PC's usage share, it didn't mean any markets shrunk but just that they all grew.

Those flexible screens are very impressive.

I see the new iPad specs are released now. I don't have any idea what I would use such a device to do.

And yes, I saw some mention that it seemed a bit early for a new iPad model. I once saw a comment about the old Polaroid instant film cameras, that buying one was nothing more than an agreement to briefly test the technology. This referring to how models, features, and films would seem to come and go so quickly.

I often thought the same thing is true of Apple.

someone took a oled flexible panel, and mounted to a hat visor w/ track IR on a 1:1 ratio/curve, so the game matches his head movements perfectly.,

In my experience adblabs they are really useful for:

- Browsing the web when not in a chair
- Reading email and tapping really short replies when not in a chair
- Light gaming (word games, short play titles) when not in a chair

It really depends on how much time you spend in a chair smile

As for Apple, they have quietly become a monster. They are the worlds most valuable company, with a market cap of $500 billion. Its last quarter earnings were $13 billion. I sometimes think of them as 'the company that Microsoft kept alive for fun, i.e. the 'Audi' of computing, but the iPhone and iPad has changed all that (they sold 176 million devices last year) - with a halo knock-on impact on the Macs and OSX. It's crazy really..

What color is your hair?

(kidding) smile

There is no functional difference. I had a iPad 1 in black and an iPad 2 in white, and prefer the look of the black, but it's a purely personal thing.

Love our iPad2. iPads are like other seemingly non-essentials. You don't wonder how you'd get along without one -- until you buy and use it.
