I tired it, but the Metro thing was horrible. Didnt seem to boot up any faster than win 7 64 bit. I think this may be the first OS i pass up on.

I have both Windows 8 and Windows 7 on separate hard drives on one machine. But, I did not "clock" the boot time. Both "felt" similar. Windows 8 might have been a bit quicker but there were fewer applications to load as it was a fresh Windows 8 install. This author indicates faster Windows 8 vs Windows 7 boot process with SSD (he claims more than twice as fast overall) and easier recovery from crash/blue-screen. Speed improvement may require SSD to be noticeable (as Hard Drives lengthen the process so that its always slow). Overall, says overclocking sessions are somewhat less daunting with Windows 8 -- because of its faster boot and better error recovery. Windows 8 Facilitates OC Sessions Interesting to me because my "first" SSD is due today or tomorrow, and I plan to put Windows 8 on it. "Overclocking ease" would be another thing to test. Don't know how quickly I'll get to all that as this is a busy week.

I think I've "given up" on Windows 8.
After using it a couple days on the SSD on my main system, it is much less awkward to navigate. However, at the end of the day, its more trouble than its worth for a desktop system (my opinion and my use patterns -- others may find it useful). One can set it up to be nearly as smooth as Windows 7 -- but why? -- we have Windows 7.
Too bad, I like to use new things. Windows 8 is a new thing that will have to wait. For practice, I will continue using it on a very secondary HTPC -- where its networking capabilities seem to give it a "reason for being".

It's funny where someone in one article said that Windows 8 should really only have been an 'upgrade' for Windows 7. Indeed, in this day-and-age of more and more downloadable content for games and other software, I think that perhaps the days of releasing whole new operating systems should be gone.
For what it's worth, I think Windows 7 is the best Windows OS to date, and could probably be maintained and made better simply by periodical upgrades - even if you have to pay for the 'big' updates.
I mean Windows 98 was really just an extension of Windows 95, Windows ME was just an extension of Windows 98, and Windows XP was just an extension of Windows ME. Windows 7 was really just an extension of Windows Vista. The only real groundbreaking leaps in the Windows series was from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, and Windows XP to Windows Vista - or when 16-bit was really overtaking 32-bit, and when 32-bit was being challenged by 64-bit.
We've kind of been duped by Microsoft for so long, and it's not helped by the fact that people just have to have the newest versions of everything - even if the real, practical differences are minimal.

In my experience, the step from WinME to XP was far beyond any extension. As for 8, I'm not going to bother with testing the preview or any betas as I did with Win7. Win7 is perfectly usable even with my few UI gripes. And I still run the 32 bit version of Win7. A large part is not having any interest in Metro. I'm at a similar point on my Linux desktops which I've always preferred run Gnome 2.x. I tested Gnome 3 and could not stand the massive "tablet thinking" and Apple like influences that seemed to be everywhere.

95 and 98 were close,
but from 98 to XP was night and day,
Me ws a joke. i think they re-skinned 95 for 95 SR2, 98, 98 Second Edition, ME.
but ME was utter crap, it didnt last more than 1 day before I removed it and went back to 98, then to 2000 Pro.

I had to stick with ME. I only had Win95 to fall back on, and some of my new software required Win98 or later. No decent budget back then to replace the ME upgrade I had already paid for.
