Ouch, critical manning I take it? 2W1 was overloaded for once, were forcing people to crosstrain..... didn't have to force me lol.

I am Air Force Intel and new to fighter missions so I have to go through the initial training to support the F-16 missions. We are involved in everything from mission planning to conducting threat training for the pilots. You have to know everything inside and out just as the pilot does, which is the reason for the sim time. For example we have to know not only how the radar works theoretically speaking, but have to know how to physically operate it as well. If I am going to tell a pilot how to defeat a certain threat I have to know what he/she is going through in the cockpit so I don't give them some stupid tip that would be unpractical.

Sounds like a good plan . . . wish the intel types in my airframe did that . . . might have reduced the number of dumb requests/suggestions . . .

At the time I tried to x-train we weren't, not sure about now. I have a little more the 7 years to go and I can retire. They wouldn't have to force me to x-train either. Me first 2 bases I didn't mind, but my current base I hate it. Luke is/was a good base, we still have our house in Surprise, renting it out. with the housing market looks like we'll be back there when I retire or if I can get stationed there again.

lol. What airframe was that?

Vipers are a pretty proud bunch, they want anyone involved to be an expert. It is a bit intimidating but enjoying the challenge.

Well we never did get to the better sims but we did get to take a "field trip" to Nellis AFB and meet some aggressor pilots and get some awesome Flanker threat briefings from them, followed by an up close and personal Raptor tour which was amazing. Didn't get to sit in the cockpit but we got to climb up and check it out; it is amazing how few switches there are compared to the Viper. Also got to tour the threat training center otherwise known as "the petting zoo", had a few acft you could sit in like a HIND, Flogger, Fulcrum, as well as tons of armor, AAA, and SAM systems. Was pretty awesome.

If anyone is interested in checking it out here is a good album which photos, not mine. Our enemies don't have many secrets lol. http://news.webshots.com/album/557166656ycHsWZ?start=0

Did you go look at the Mig-29 they have sitting outside? I wish I would have gotten a chance to see everything in the gate when I was TDY there.

You talking about the C variant in front of the aggressor squadron? They also had an A variant inside the threat center we could sit in, along with an AA-10a and AA-11. Fun times.

No wonder we have such good target recognition for radars and flir computers.
