So I wasn't posting around here when the live action movie hit. Did anyone else see it? I was blown away. I've probably watched it 10 times already. I find it interesting that they basically did a straight remake of "Farewell Yamato" which was so reviled in Japan when it was released that they had to make 2 more full TV series before the fans forgave them. For any other fans of Yamato there is also a new anime series coming up. Looks like a straight remake of the original with updated animation.

Trailer for the film(Ignore the lame Steven Tyler song in this trailer it only plays during the credits. The rest of the soundtrack is orchestral and amazing):

Yes I saw it and only because I was familiar with the animated series otherwise I would have thought it pretty cheesy, but it wasn't bad as Live action Japanese Movies go.

Dude, as a kid, I LOVED that show! I used to run home because school ended right when it came on.

In my closet, all nice and in the box is a beautiful Star Blazers Argo/Yamato that I paid way too much for a few years ago.

For me, it was the first cartoon that had a continuing storyline, characters that could die, and relationships that you cared about. I'd love to see a modern take on it.

Awesome. Best cartoon, ever. We watched it every morning in the 70's before school. I'm dying to see the live action film, but haven't been able to find it, yet.

That pretty much sums up why a lot of Japanese shows from the 70s-80s blow away anything released in the US in that era.

I vaguely remember seeing Starblazers as a very young child. Probably between the ages of 5-8. I had no understanding though of the plots beyond a basic understanding that it was a crew in a spaceship that looked like a battleship and they went on these missions and stuff. biggrin

For such a sci-fi buff you're really missing out by not watching anime PM.

The live action film looks alright but I HATE anime with a passion as most of it caters to the pervy male fanbase and we all know Japan's tolerance of looking at young girls in hardly any clothing....

Which is exactly why 95% of the anime I own and love is from the 70s and 80s before that "moe" crap became the norm in Japanese animation. I can only think of a handful of titles from the last decade that are worth watching and of those the majority are from franchises started in the "golden age"(roughly 1979-1989). I'd be happy to recommend some titles that are long on sci-fi and short on T&A to anyone that's interested.

I know "Ghost in the Shell" is highly acclaimed so I'll see if Netflix has that available.
