I've gleamed so much information about EAW problems, I am totally at a loss.
I'm running XP sp2, intel D915GAG mb...Pent4 3.2Ghz Prescott...Asus GeForce 8400GS
I stil get the 7217 error code.
What can I do...I miss this sim so much.
Please help an ol'bird.

I guess that you are running the stock EAW from the CD and probably patched to version 1.2
With your video card you will always get the 7217 error with 1.2 because your card no longer supports 8 bit graphics, and cannot display the selection screens.
The eaw.exe is programmed to test for 8 bit compatibility, and CTDs with the dreaded 7217 error if the test fails.

However, in the 1.28 series we included a workaround which fixes the 7217 problem.
So make a copy of your EAW folder, and name the copy 1.28E.
Then go to the link in my signature and download the four 1.28E installer files, and run them in your 1.28E folder.
This should overcome the 7217 problem, but there may be others such as screen tearing which we can address once you are not getting 7217.

Cheers

Hi Cumelter and welcome. The problem is your video card.I run my games on a P4 with XP,but learnt long ago to use nVidia geforce 5000 series video cards. They are readily available again,China makes them.I use a 5500 card and the game and it's mods run ok,except for the Briefing Screens which shred. But this can be easily fixed with Max188's Briefing Screen registry fix and then all is fine.Try it.
To make things a bit easier get yourself another cheap P4 PC and get the card, then your fine.I have several PC's and ensure I'm not caught out
Cheers

Well, I had thought about setting up an old Cyrix 686 just to install the game then see if I could copy the folder over to another system using a flash drive.
I d/l from this site before but really didn't have a grip on what to do first.
I have the Infogramer disc and not the Microprose....
My intel board D915GAG onboard graphics would hurt this program too?
My 8400GS is the main problem, you say?

well, i'm going to try again....Downloading this link as I type..\
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41230226/EAW/Files.exe

Thanks for holding my hand.
So first off-
I'll install from the CD?
Then just drag those files/subfolders into a new directory?
Then run your Files.exe and point it to the new directory?
Am I missing any steps here?

Basically, yes.Having just gone thru this myself.Have a look at my recent FAW thread,it tells what to do.
Install EAW from your CD
Don't patch it to 1.2
Download Jels stuff and install in the order he tells you.All are self install zips. All you have to do is point and click, and you create your 1.28e install.
Good luck WinkNGrin

Please remember to 'copy' the files from the CD
to a folder. Do NOT 'install' from the disc.

Once you have copied the files from the CD to a folder,
patch it with the 1.28e files downloaded from Jel's sig.

I alluded to this possibility in my first reply.
What we need to try now is the d3d windower.
It is a program which runs EAW in a window.
You run the program, set the path to your eaw.exe, and launch EAW from the windower.
Do a search for a download link, there are some posts about it in this forum.

CuMelter,
I too run XP. (SP3, but also ran XP2 for a long while.
This fix worked for me for the main menu and map screens.
Quote:

1) Open Regedit by going to Start/Run/regedit
2) Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\VIDEO
3) Look for the name:
\Device\Video0
4) Look at the cooresponding Data value. It will look something like this:
\Registry\Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{52BE6E44-53E9-4A0B-AF3C-70A73F8AD1CE}\0000
5) Make note of the value in the brackets and the instance at the end of the line. You may want to print
out this branch (cntrl-p) to easily reference these values later. In this example it is:
{52BE6E44-53E9-4A0B-AF3C-70A73F8AD1CE}\0000
6) Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video
7) There may be several sub-categories. Select the one that matches the value in the brackets you noted
in step 5. In this example it is:
{52BE6E44-53E9-4A0B-AF3C-70A73F8AD1CE}
8) Select the instance you noted in step 5. In this example it is:
\0000
9) Right-click this same instance (\0000) and select New/DWORD Value. This will create a value called
"New Value #1".
10) Right click the "New Value #1" and rename it to

NoAdjustedPitch

11) Double-click the new NoAdjustedPitch and assign it a Hexadecimal value of 1.
13) Exit regedit and reboot.
14) The Briefing screens and maps should now be working properly.

This fix is easier than it sounds if you just follow it step by step.
If it does NOT work for you, download the D3DWindower here:

Let us know how it goes..... thumbsup

Hmmm, That is Max188's Briefing Room fix for ppl who have Nvidia Geforce cards greater than the 5000 series. We are looking at an intro screen for EAW here, something entirely different.I think the later Video Card itself here is the problem.Buy yourself a nvidia 5500 card, they can be bought cheap these days or contact Mr Jelly again and further discuss using 1.28e to correct this issue
