I always thought the MiG-21 was a good looking plane, and now these "photo-realistic" pit repaints by comrade lit a fire under my seat to try one in a campaign. Chose the original MiG-21F flying for Czechoslovakia in 1963. It flies really well, but damn if it doesn't carry more than what seems like 20 bullets! You gotta make every shot count if you want to get a kill.

Tell me this ain't a looker...

Repaints for most of the MiG-21 pits are HERE (in the SF1 section, which is why it took me a while to notice).

I've always like the looks of many of the 50's jets, the Mig-21F certainly being one of the classics. In later models the spine got out of control for the additional avionics and fuel, someone eventually deciding that even in Soviet Russia, it was important for a plane to have enough fuel to make it out of the pattern.

yeah, that too. Without that external tank, you ain't getting anywhere. And even with it, bingo fuel comes up very soon.

EDIT: I thought I was exaggerating saying 20 rounds of ammo. I was, but just barely. The MiG-21F-13 only carried 30 rounds. Why bother having a cannon at all?

The MiG-29 only carries 150 rounds I think?

You are correct. Hey, that's 5 times as many. You might be able to shoot down a plane or 2 with 150!

I agree that 30 rounds is a extremelly low ammo capability but for me at least, those 30 bullets are more effective than one or even two (if I can make every round count) AA-2A Atoll missiles which is what the Mig-21F-13 can carry externally. wink

So does the Eurofighter...
I've been able to down a plane with as little as 9 rounds, but it requires quite some time+concentration...

And a "safe environment" which is not actually that feasible in a real war scenario.
Just my 2 cents.

Today, having a low ammo capacity would not be such a big deal, what with advanced missiles like the R-73 or AIM-9M being so effective. Agree that 30 rounds is better than 2 Atolls. AA-2A is basically a Sidewinder B, and we all know how effective those are. :P

s.

I'll say!

I guess the main thing the MiG could do is make sure enemy bombers don't reach their targets. In reality, you could scare them off with no ammo at all.

EDIT: Just finished my 5th mission where, with guns only, I got a F-84F, and a Phantom-C flown by an Ace. I worked for that one. That's why to bother having a cannon. :P

Don't the later versions of the -21 have more ammo?
