Uh huh. It'll all be peaceful and quiet until they run out of booze onboard. I heard a couple of stories from folks on the Carnival Splendor a couple of years ago...

On every Costa cruise so many pleasures await you that you can indulge in the vacation of a lifetime without ever setting foot on land. Do as much or as little as you like on a ship that is practically an island unto itself. From sunup to sundown you will find activities to suit your changing moods. So whether you kick up your heels or kick back and relax, there's never a dull moment when you cruise Italian Style.

They got that right!

Here's the latest updates:

http://www.costacruises.co.uk/B2C/GB/Info/allegra_statement.htm

Quote:
Monday, February 27th 2012

Time 11.00 pm (CET)
As of 10pm tonight, after having contacted all the 627 passengers contact emergency numbers, Costa Crociere reached families/relatives of 402 passengers on a total of 627 (excluded the 9 italian marines onboard for security reasons).
All the crew families/relatives have been contacted directly by the Company or through the manning agent.

Time 10.00 pm (CET)
The first boat expected to reach Costa Allegra during the next few hours is a French-flagged, 295-foot-long (90 meters) ocean-going fishing ship. Another ship of similar size currently is sailing toward Costa Allegra and will join two merchant ships and two tugboats expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon.
Upon arrival of the first ship, its captain will decide how to operate, depending on weather and ship conditions, to best support Costa Allegra.
Currently, Costa Allegra is steady and conditions are safe.
Costa Cruises is keeping in touch with guests' families via their emergency-contact numbers. The line also is communicating with the families of crew, most of whom are Italian and eastern European, through local crew-recruiting organizations.
Costa Allegra is in compliance with all certificates required by both national and international regulations. Moreover, in October 2011 the ship received its regularly scheduled maintenance in dry dock.

I went on the Costa Victoria back in 2001 when they used to do Caribbean cruises. Thankfully I had no bad incidents!

Let's see.. small fire in the engine room that disables the electrical panel that powers the engines... the ship is adrift with no significant physical damage and no passengers are hurt, so no insurance will seriously investigate the accident.

However, in the wake of the Concordia tragedy, HUGE reputational damage to the company.
Dreamlike scenario for some big competitor that wants to buy them out cheap, or put them out of business.
I'd bet on sabotage smile

Costa is owned by Carnival, the largest cruiseline in the world so it will really be up to Carnival to decide if Costa continues to exist or not.

Of course, and Carnival will decide on the basis of projected economic results and market share, which will be no doubt affected by the recent events.
BTW Royal Caribbean has almost double the net revenues of Carnival (see http://www.cruisemarketwatch.com/blog1/market-share/)
The market is huge, with great potential for growth, and a large number of competitors who stand to gain from a hypotethical demise of Costa Crociere, or a reduction of its current market share.

Oh wow, I had no idea Royal Carribean had double the net revenues of Carnival. Interesting...

I loved this bit of text from the linked article
A facility on Costa Cruises' website allowing people to track the Allegro's position says that "data transmission is temporarily suspended".

Lol.. Panzer should be looking into a possible lawsuit against Costa for having to experience such a trivial standard cruise biggrin

They should have stuck to making coffee smile

My wife's been on a few cruises in the past. She's always trying to convert me to taking a cruise but I share Billy Connolly's comments: "A ship is safe in the harbour, but that’s not what ships are for.” I think he also said something like "A cruise ship is like being in prison with the option of drowning". She's always telling me that you can get off and go ashore but I think that I'd be like a caged animal on a cruise ship.

Regards

Aces

Well at least in this category, Costa has plenty of company. Most of the major cruiselines have had at least one breakout of food poisoning over the past couple of years. I live in Miami so I always see plenty of news coverage about what goes on in the cruise industry.
