I saw it in a theater in rural Canada.
First impressions: - first hour of the movie has several scenes either lower resolution or slightly out of focus. - Then the actual filming of interior cqb for the hostage rescue was poorly done, couldnt make heads or tails of the action. - a few "typical action movie unrealism", like extra large bullet holes, M-72 "nuke variant" Bruikheimer edition
-the "stiff acting"...I'm not so sure its really that bad...that's what a lot of soldiers are really like. Not all of them, but many. Sure, maybe they could benefit from more acting classes, but there's a LOT of Hollywood types who have been working for decades and still cant act their way out of a paper bag...Steven Segal anyone? (yea, we dont watch him for his acting, but still...) - the story scenario seems much more real-world and plausible than most "action movies". -fun to see the MH-47's lift swiftboats into action. Same for seeing the mini subs.
-this is NOT a Hollywood movie. But it IS an action movie, and they may have purposely made it not 100% real.
I enjoyed it a lot. The way the movie ended and wrapped up, aces IMO.
Keep in mind- this is their FIRST MOVIE. Who's first effort is ever 100% perfect?! What I do know, is I really want to see their future efforts, I think they are onto something. A different "flavor" of "special operators movie" that Hollywood seems to have gone stale with.
Also nice to see real world enemies, not politically correct "approved" enemies concocted from the fevered nightmares of Hollywood execs.

The problem with "real" gun recordings is they don't sound like "real" guns. Mics aren't usually capable of capturing concussive sounds like that. For example, having witnessed multiple rocket and shuttle launches over the last decade or so, I can affirm not ONE TV or film has ever been close. Not even the IMAX films NASA made get it. Mics can't get it, so they engineer one and they never get it right. "Heat" did it....... - Then the actual filming of interior cqb for the hostage rescue was poorly done, couldnt make heads or tails of the action. In real life, I'm pretty sure the SEALs themselves could barely make heads or tails of the action. Firefights are chaos--organized or otherwise.

The way the movie ended and wrapped up, aces IMO. This is my one quibble. We are told that there are 16 vests and 16 bombers. 8 of them go to Mexicali. A few of them are nabbed in the earlier raid. What happened to the rest? That said, I liked it. The four guys I went with all liked it (lowest rating out of 10 was 8/10). The problem with most reviewers is that they like the notebook.

Well, I guess we'll find out in the sequel next year! Just kidding, I've no idea if they will consider a sequel or not.

nice write up on Military.com http://undertheradar.military.com/2012/02/say-yes-to-act-of-valor/If you want moral complexity and subtle acting, there’s a few hundred movies we could recommend that you watch instead. If you can overlook the cheesier parts of the ceramic ball bearing terrorist plot, then Act of Valor offers a real sense of what life and combat are like for the SEALs who serve our country.

I only just saw the trailer for this film last night. I was all like "Yeah... yeah... yeah" when I saw what looked like generic action sequences with Holywood-esque explosions and so forth. But then it mentioned 'active duty Navy Seals' and my ears pricked up. Whether that is enough to make it a good film or not, I don't know, but it looked pretty crappy until I heard that line. There seems to be several different trailers for this film, so maybe I can't judge it on the one I saw, which may also be for the UK release only.

By saying subtle acting I assume the critic means wooden acting? haha I had to suffer through this film last week. Fantastic action sequences!! The rest of the film is a waste of time.

It's a refreshing change to see the bad guys be actual enemies of the United States instead of turncoat general officers, disgruntled former special forces types, corporate American interests, or conservative Tea Party types.

It was a good movie, but some of the acting was horrible.
