Hullo all,
I'm building a small cockpit/Desk.

Before I can post some pics I need to fix the Warthog to the table itself.
Since space is a limit for me I have to remove the large base from the stick.

That leaves me with the need for 4 screws that can go through 2,5 cm ( 0.984 inches) of plywood and fit comfortably in the stick base.

Any tips?

Also, since I'm still relatively green in this field, how do I manage to put these screws correctly without destroying either the table or the stick?
Thanksabbunch!

IIRC the screws are 3/16"x1" or 4x25mm according to the sticker on the package of screws. Just buy the screw long enough to go through the wood and into the base. To put it through the wood, drill a hole just slightly bigger than the screw diameter and probably wiggle the drill bit a bit inside as well so you have a slightly wider entry and exit hole -- useful for when your holes aren't 100% exactly lined up biggrin

Sorry I could not give more info, most of my success was through trial-and-error.

@ICE: Whoa, right! You had me to think the right way around!

I was considering to do a hole slightly SMALLER but actually you are SO RIGHT!
Brilliant!

THAAT'S IT! God, that's a thing I wouldn't have thought about...

Uhm, do not take my over enthusiasm for sarcasm, it isn't! I really am HAPPY! biggrin

So, I'd use the base holes (that base I'm removing) as a template for where to drill and do that...
Seriously, thank you ICE.

Lol, no problem. I've been having difficulty "communicating" across the forums lately so thanks for explaining enthusiasm vs sarcasm.

The problem I've encountered is that even if you use the base plate as template, most of the time the hole is not 100% perfect 90-degrees, so the exit hole at the other end is now skewed. So even if your other 3 holes are perfect, getting that last screw in will be difficult.

I am quite skeptical about using plywood though, unless you plan to anchor that plywood down to some thicker bits of wood. I tend to over-engineer my stuff so I'm using 18mm MDF, the idea being the MDF will not flex when I'm "throwing the stick around." I wonder if your plywood can handle the "stress" of having the stick mounted on it plus the forces involved when using the stick.

Yeah, I thought about that. I've used 2,5 cm thick Plywood.

Trust me, it weighs at least 10 kg. ^^,

You can also make a thinner plywood base just to accept the screws, drill the holes in the thicker plywood oversized so that the screw heads will fit inside them and your screwdriver or socket key will still reach them, and glue the thinner base over the thicker one. That way the underside will be flush, but the base should still be plenty stiff enough

Uhm, that's an idea too.

Only problem I see is actually find screws with the right grooves...

Are these common? Standard?

The thread count should be common, and then obviously the length would depend on how thick your plywood is + the actual length of the original screws. Lol, 2.5cm, didn't realize. That should be good enough.

Was wondering though, center mount or side mount?

Yeah, that's the sad part. Had to go with a side mount.
Space is really an issue, in that we have a small and narrow room as "office"...

Gonna post some pix when I'll be back home.

Cool. Are you building a pit or just making a "desk pit"?
