I always wondered if the Sharkmouth paint scheme on the A-10 had a connection to the American Volunteer Group (AVG) of Flying Tigers fame.

So, for others who might not know -it does. The link is from 2005, but does give a nice history of the unit.

Cool, I always wondered why they had a shark mouth on a hog.

So they are the only group allowed to have the sharkmouth scheme? I find it a bit funny that a "Flying Tiger" group has a shark mouth...

What about those that have a snake on the front?

Yes the 23rd Fighter Group (made up of the 74th, 75th, and 76th Fighter Squadrons) are the only A-10s authorized to have the shark teeth on the jets. The "Flying Tigers' was the nickname of the1st American Volunteer Group (AVG). That's why the shark teeth. Which was on every P-40 they flew just like it's on every A-10 we fly now.

The snake on the front is for 163rd Fighter Squadron 'Blacksnakes.'

Paul's a Flying Tiger, and I'm a Blacksnake. smile

"Blacksnake" goes back to the war with the Indians after the American Revolution. There was a white child who was raised by Indians (after they killed his family) who lived in my area called Little Turtle who fought for the Indians at first and then switched sides. His nickname was Blacksnake.

Nice. I did not know the shark/snake mouth was "restricted" to certain units. How about the hog mouth? Or am I just imagining things?

As far as I know...

Shark teeth (FT) = (Flying Tigers). Moody AFB, GA. A-10s with teeth, but also a C-130 FT with teeth, and HH-60G Pavehawks with teeth as CCTs.

Blacksnakes (IN) = 122nd FW Indiana ANG. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Flying Razorbacks (FS) = 188FW, Arkansas ANG. Fort Smith, Arkansas. Razorback Warthog face

Warthog face (BD) = Barksdale AFB, 917th Wing/47thFS Dogpatchers,

These are the only "faces" authorized as of this posting.
