Operation SEA LION and the Role of the Luftwaffe in the Planned Invasion of England
Karl Klee
US Air Force. 1950
Operation Sea Lion (German: Unternehmen Seelöwe) was Germany's plan to invade the United Kingdom during the Second World War, beginning in 1940. To have had any chance of success, however, the operation would have required air and naval supremacy over the English Channel. With the German defeat in the Battle of Britain, Sea Lion was postponed indefinitely on 17 September 1940 and never carried out.

Hi John,

If, as seems increasingly probable these download sites decide to shut down as a result of current legislation, I for one will be saddened by their loss. Since you brought them to our attention on the forum I have downloaded enough books and files to keep me in reading material until I am senile. Thanks for that, it is much appreciated. I suppose on the upside it means you will have more time to spend on your family. You have 3 young kids, I had 2 so I know the problems.

Be well.

Pete

By Henry Woodhouse
New York, The Century Co. 1920
This monumental work on aeronautic engineering is of special importance and value at this time because it tells in a simple language, and without difficult formulas, how large aeroplanes can be built for aerial transportation, and, by giving the drawings, diagrams and photographs of existing and proposed types of aeroplanes and a wealth of engineering data, will assist engineers in building aeroplanes large and small, for aerial transportation, and other purposes.

Australasia triumphant! With the Australians and New Zealanders in the great war on land and Sea
By Adcock, Arthur St. John
London. Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent. 1916
It is too soon to attempt the telling at large and in detail of all that has been done by Australia and New Zealand in the Great War. There is much that has, for military reasons, not yet been revealed; and what has been told has come to us from various sources in more or less fragmentary fashion, so that one must read several accounts of the same event in order to get anything of an adequate idea of it. All I have done here is to collate such documents as are available and gather together a connected narrative, not only of the actual campaigning, but of the spiritual and mental experiences the Australasians have passed through since August 1-14, the way they have faced this crisis in their history, and the effect the war has had on their national life. I have drawn on official documents, on the dispatches of Sir Ian Hamilton, the reports of the various correspondents of our English and the chief Australian and New Zealand newspapers, on the speeches of public men and letters of private citizens, and on a few conversations I have had with some of the wounded Anzacs whom I have met in these latter days about London....

Preliminary Pilot's Handbook of fly Operating Instructions NAVY Model PBY-6A Airplane AN 01-5MC-1.
US NAVY 1944
The Consolidated PBY Catalina was an American flying boat of the 1930s and 1940s produced by Consolidated Aircraft. It was one of the most widely used multi-role aircraft of World War II. PBYs served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in the air forces and navies of many other nations. In the United States Army Air Forces and later in the United States Air Force their designation was OA-10. A Canadian-built PBY would be familiarly called a Canso.

Navion - Structural repair manual
Ryan Aeronautical Company
The Navion is a United States single-engine, four-seat aircraft originally designed and built by North American Aviation in the 1940s. It was later built by Ryan Aeronautical Company and the Tubular Steel Corporation (TUSCO). The Navion was envisioned as an aircraft that would perfectly match the expected postwar boom in civilian aviation, since it was designed along the general lines of, and by the same company which produced the North American P-51 Mustang, generally regarded as one of the best Allied fighter aircraft.

The great munition feat, 1914-1918
Dewar, George Albermarle Bertie; White, Andrew Dickson
London: Constable 1921
Since the war ended we have seen a reaction of sorts over the munition crusade between August 1914 and November 1918. Enthusiasm has waned : it is in human nature that it should have waned : and some people have rushed to the conclusion. that it was a ruinously wasteful crusade, inefficient, even corrupt. My conclusions differ from these. I have been made well aware, whilst visiting factories, talking to their managers and workpeople, and couecting information and impressions for this book, that money was spent with both hands all through the movement ; that there were mistakes, overlapping of authority, disappointments, failures, in this branch of industry and in that during the four and a half years. But viewing the thing as a whole, not suffering the judgment to be diverted by details, I have concluded that, far from being ruinously wasteful, this was the least spendthrift of any great national industrial effort in our history. We compressed into that period of peril and burning anxiety the labour and the intelligence and the public spirit which ordinarily would be expended in four decades rather than four years or so. Surveying the feat and its figures of output, I confess I cannot imagine.

Flag and fleet: how the British navy won the freedom of the seas
Wood, William Charles Henry
Toronto: Macmillan 1919
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
The Author accepts full responsibility for the two very serious omissions and the few minor slips which occurred while this book was being hurried through the press. Everything has been corrected for the next edition.
The following should come between the two paragraphs on P. 239: "The grand totals for the lines of battle were: 30 Germaii and 37 British. The Germans had 17 Dreadnought and 8 pre-Dreadnought battleships besides their "5 Dreadnought battle cruisers. The British had 28 battleships and 9 battle cruisers, Dreadnoughts all."
The omissions on P. 254 are much more serious still, because they completely reverse the meaning. Lines 19 and 20 now read "turned the fleet end-on, facing the Germans, just in time ". They ought to read "turned
the fleet end-on, away from Scheer, while the observers of course remained facing the Germans. Jellicoe did this just in time ".
On the same P. 254 the second paragraph, which now ends with "grazing her bows", should end with the following sentence: "The torpedoes had only ten knots of extra speed with which to overhaul the twenty-knot dreadnoughts. Had Jellicoe turned toward the German line, then ships and torpedoes would have met at the possibly fatal combined speed of fifty knots."

The Beardmore-Farquhar Machine Guns Models of 1924
William Beardmore & Company Limited 1936
The Beardmore-Farquhar light machine gun has its roots in the Fraquhar-Hill self-loading rifle, developed by 1917 by Mobray G. Farquhar and Arthur Hill. This rifle got as far as being formally adopted by British Army in 1918, but the Armistice put this process to an end before mass production could be started. This was a gas-operated, rotary bolt rifle which used an interesting and unusual action, in which gas piston first compressed a powerful operating spring, which then transferred its energy to the bolt group. In theory, this permitted for relatively gentle action and mild recoil, but the weapon was not developed enough when war ended. The same action was then used for light machine gun, which was initially developed in around 1919. The Beardmore-Farquhar name comes from the names of designer (Farquhar) and manufacturer (Beardmore Engineering Co.), although the weapon was patented to same gentlemen Fraquhar and Hill. The weapon had unusually “skinny” appearance and weighted noticeably less than contemporary light machine guns such as Lewis or Madsen. Beardmore-Farquhar light machine guns were tried several times by British Small Arms Committee and certain other European armies during late 1920s and early 1930s, and each time turned down for various reasons.
The Beardmore Engineering Co. also offered a scaled-up version of the Beardmore-Farquhar machine gun, chambered for .5 Vickers (12.7x81 mm) ammunition. It was similar in external appearance and design to the rifle-caliber weapon of the same name, but was appropriately bigger and heavier. A .50 caliber Beardmore-Farquhar machine gun used 52- or 29-round flat pan magazines (with two or single layer design, respectively), or 10-round box magazines. Mounted on lightweight tripod, .50 caliber Beardmore-Farquhar machine gun weighted just short of 20 kg (less ammunition) and was 152 cm long. It was widely promoted during 1930s as a “lightweight anti-tank machine gun”, but found no buyers.
Beardmore-Farquhar light machine gun used same gas-operated, rotary bolt action with intermediate spring buffer as the Fraquhar-Hill self-loading rifle, with major changes being relocation of the hammer unit from the bottom to the top of receiver, selective fire trigger (with semi- and full-auto modes of fire) and position of the feed unit. Air-cooled barrel was of quick detachable type. Feed was from top-mounted flat pan magazines. Alternate (possibly back-up) feed option was to use specially designed detachable box magazines with 5-round capacity, which were installed horizontally above and to the left of the receiver. Beardmore-Farquhar light machine gun was provided with wooden pistol grip and shoulder stock. Lightweight bipod was fitted below the barrel.
