Chaps,
A could of days ago i added what used to be an external HDD to my system as an internal.. All booted OK and the system seemed fine.

Then i started iracing and bang, BSOD.. restart, start BF3.. bang.. BSOD. This has now been happening consistently for several days.

The PC is approximately 2 years old and home built with no previous issues. I upgraded the video card about a month ago to a MSI 6950 and it has been running great.

I have done a preliminary search for the driver that appears to be causing the issue (HAL.dll) and it apparently is a general hardware fault. However one of the initial pieces of advice is to check the boot order in the bios in case of something dickie having happened after installing a HDD.. lo and behold there was the a change to the order putting the installed HDD front and centre. I have now removed it, sorted the boot order but the BSOD's continue.

Below is a copy of the latest dump file associated with the BSOD.

As a further piece of info i carried out a full re installation of Win 7 and this has made no difference meaning i am leaning toward a hardware fault. In view of this i am about to take my PC apart to make sure all my components are seated correctly.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers
Marcus.

Yeah, checking to make sure everything is seated is a good approach, otherwise I would test your memory (memtest86+ unless builtin to bios), otherwise see if you can swap in another video card or switch to onboard video.

My best guess would be faulty memory though.

Check CPU/RAM voltages, run CPU stability test (AMD Overdrive 4.xx does this, for at least 45m-1hr.)
Adding Hardware can sometimes (and i mean sometimes), cause CPU to not get enough juice, increasing Voltage a lil in bios would re-stabilize.

especially if one or the other or both are overclocked, I think Stock PhenomII x4 955 is 3.2GHz, your DXDIAG reports 3.6GHz.

If your running windows 7,
the Hardware Abstration Layer (HAL, aka HAL.DLL) is incredibly sensitive to under voltages and hardware time outs on the system bus'
So an overclock that is stable in WinXP might need about a .025 Volt increase on the voltage to be stable in Win7.
Moving a HDD could change power draw enough to cause this.

Some other reported Solutions:
The MBR on the external/now internal drive is wonked? maybe?, (not likely),

but if the drive recognized as the same drive letter as it was when it was external, then you might want to update the policiis for the drive. (USB Ext. Drives are usually setup as "Optimize for Quick Removal", if its still set that way as an internal drive, you might want to switch it to "Optimize for Performance".

Also, Virus Scanner's (NOD32) can cause this.

Cheers Kludger, and skate good spot.. its a BE phenom so clocked to 3.6. I did just notice that the memory voltage was 1.6 and looking at the modules they report as 1.8 so i have bumped that up.

I have removed the hdd so no extra voltage being nicked from the cpu but i will consider it. Also i have replaced my old g-card which was a 4890 with a 6950 and all benchmarks report the 6950 eating less juice that the 4890..

I am just running a system scan and i will also memtest then cpu test.. I will also install MSI Kombustor to see if my card as an issue.

** as an addendum to this, i have replaced the HDD back in it's external caddy and it all reports as OK and i can read and write to it with no issues.**

you coulda left it internal, and just made sure it was setup as an internal drive.

Yeah, power dropping too low, ESD damaging internals when you open it, and loose connections are the top 3 reasons for instability after a hardware change/upgrade. There's also s/w and driver issues of course, but something like a new HDD shouldn't go there.

One thing i think i forgot to mention. the BSODS only happen when gaming.

Further update:
1 hour of memtest: No issues, BSOD still happening when gaming.
15 minutes of MSI Kombustor run with no issues, G/Card seems OK. BSOD continues when gaming.
I have run the SFC /SCANNOW message and all is OK as well. BSOD continues when gaming.
Anti virus removes: BSOD continues whilst gaming.
Bios updated: no difference: BSOD still happening whilst gaming.

I will now move the DDR to another 2 slots.

I am in the process of moving all items off the external HDD to format it as an internal and try it in place of my current HDD. However i am starting to get worn down by this.. any other suggestions?

Ok, i pumped a little more voltage (just 1 clock in bios) to my CPU as per Skate's suggestion and i have now had 1 hour of successful AMD Overdrive CPU stability test with a high of 51 degrees followed by 30 minutes of battlefield 3.. a record for the last 2 days.

I'm still not certain all is well but i will leave AMD on for a few hours overnight and see how it has got on in the morning.

So far, so good.. cheers Skate. Although, why it needs the extra juice now is anyones guess.. it has been fine for 2 or 3 years!

**EDIT** Overnight the comouter survived 5 hours of prime95 stress testing.. now for some gaming.

DINGDINGDINGDING we have a winner!

Nudged up the cpu voltage by .025v and it's rock solid. Cheers guys, and especially Skatezilla.

Glad you sorted it out, I've had to solve a similar issue with my SLI setup, I've had to bump up the voltage on my 'not quite identical' 460 to avoid crashes and other instability since the BF3 optimised drivers came out. Seems to me that whatever DICE have done with their new engine is pushing the limits a touch too far for certain setups.
