Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

We continue our investigation of last year's intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database but we found no evidence that the intruders took information from that database. That is still the case.

Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.

We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it's a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.

We are still investigating and working with law enforcement authorities. Some state laws require a more formal notice of this incident so some of you will get that notice, but we wanted to update everyone with this new information now.

Gabe

And this is why data should be encrypted--a few bonus points for Steam in this case. Unfortunate that they were hacked, but it's good that they were somewhat prepared. It gets old hearing about stolen data that a company didn't bother to even encrypt.
I've noticed a couple of steam updates this week, but I didn't read up on them. I wonder if they were related to this?

One hang-over from that that's a bit of fun is that the Steam forums will still to this day delete/change the word 'Maddox' in any posts. Not something that helped IL-2 and poor Oleg either (being a pure coincidence).

Here is an article I read a while back that had a small snippit about the hack on steam. This was in relation to anonymous hacking into a conference call between the FBI and Scotland Yard.

"The police also refer to a 15-year-old who claims to have been behind an attack on online gaming site Steam last year, where the identities and credit card details of tens of thousands of users were accessed."

My character somehow got all twisted up. I was playing the mission where you have to infiltrate the Golden Glow Estate and do multiple things. When I was out burning beehives and fighting I just eventually ran away to view my success from a distance. I first noticed it when I squated down on a tree trunk. Coot..the squatter../simHQ/2011
