TAKE OFF and STARTING a Single Engine Plane
how to actually start a single engine plane. Just what combination do I need? Magneto?
Basic answer:
Mixture: lever full forward - rich. When high altitude you can pull back
Throttle: in cockpit about an inch forward
Prop Pitch: back at first. When ready to run down runway full forward
(takes more of a bite out of the air but also encreases the RPM of engine.
So once aloft and cruzing pull it back)
Radiator: Suggest full open because you may forget and leave it closed.
If you do you will burn up the engine soon!
Fuel Cock: Open
Boost Cut-off: leave alone. It will alow you to push throttle more but you will burn your engine
Magnetos: flip both up. (this connects the electrical circuite and will cause the current to send a strong
spart to the spart plugs when engine is turning over - causing the fule to ignite in the
pistons)
Flaps: just leave up. No need for them to be down at all on a European run way.
On an aircraft carrier it might be a different story.
Ignition: I can't find a button for this in the cockpit, but when all ready press the key.
Engine should start. If it only turns over but soon dies you need a little more throttle.
Let engnie warm up: Say about 60 degrees at least, 75 best - in a Spit
Start down runway, you may need hard rudder to keep in direction you want.
Push Prop Pitch forward (full bite)
Gently push throttle forward to full throttle
(unless you have some reason you just got to get in the air immediatly)
Raise the landing gear once you are up about 200 feet and have no shaking of the plane.
