My favorite loadout in the game is 6xMavs, TGP, ECM, 2xAIM-9s. The inner 4 pylons would then either carry CBU-97s, -87s, or LGBs/IAMs. For basic armor hunting, I prefer 4xCBU-97s to deal with clustered armor, and use the gun whenever softer targets present themselves. However, I have realized this isn't really mirroring real-world loadouts for a variety of reasons. For instance, Eddie and others have mentioned that CBUs are not used by the A-10 outside of testing and are rarely even loaded on the A-10. Then there's the discussion about Mavericks and their effect on landing gear/paint/TGP and how it's not advised to have more than 4 on.

So, which weapons do the A-10 use the most? What is the most common A-10 loadout for tankbusting? For general CAS? For "I dunno what's gonna happen out there so I'll bring these with me"? I realize that sometimes the loadout will be determined by the mission goals and such, but assuming you are just going up on a general CAS flight and there is no intel about possible enemy forces that the ground guys might encounter, what do you bring?

Don't know about pure tank hunting, but for general CAS if Afghanistan its typically 2x Mavericks and a mix of JDAMS.

Depends on your target.

2x AGM-65
TGP
AIM-9
Gun

If you're plinking tanks, in addition take a pair of GBU-12's and a pair of GBU-38's.

For general CAS, Mk-82's or CBUs will do, as well as smoke rockets, but it depends on your target profile.

If you're attacking concentrations of heavy armor, 4x97 or 4x105.

Basically match your payload to your target; aim to take out most targets in one pass if you can - eg. a vehicle column can be mostly destroyed by rippling 4 Mk-82's. It's fast and it lets you get away quickly.

One weapon per pylon, the rest is just a waste of fuel ... if you're flying a realistic mission, that is.

There are as many loads as there are types of target. Generally is 2x AGM-65 of varying type, ALQ-131, 2xAIM-9M, TGP and then a mix of Mk-82, GBU-38, GBU-12 and CBU-87/103 depending on target and desired attack profiles.

If flying a COIN mission I'll leave the ALQ-131 & AIM-9s behind and leave 1 & 11 empty.

MY preferred load for on call CAS or any other mission with an unknown target is 2x 65G/K, 1x GBU-12, 1x GBU-38 and 2x Mk-82, 7x M151, TGP, ECM, 2x AIM-9M.

For COIN work I use a recent Afghanistan load of 1x AGM-65G/K, 1x GBU-12, 2x GBU-38, 1x Mk-82, 7x M151, 1x SUU-25.

Looking at some payloads that carry MK-82 on stations 4, 5, 7 and 8 I wonder if there is an option IRL to overcome the limitation that stations 5 and 7 can only ripple pairs. The payload above would only allow the following if I am right:

- ripple 2 pairs (4-8 and 5-7)
- ripple 2 singles (4-8) and drop 1 pair (5-7)

Or is there a way to "bypass" the safety feature? Of course the above counts for every weapon that can be rippled.

Not sure if it's just you misunderstanding, or just not describing things clearly, but you're not quite right here. You've actually got things backwards.

It's not the case that 5 and 7 can only ripple pairs, but rather that 5 and 7 cannot ripple in pairs. So to clarify, if for example, you have one Mk-82 on 4, 5, 7 & 8 and set a DSMS profile to ripple 4 82s in pairs when you press the pickle button the bombs will drop from 4 & 8 at the same time (as a pair) and then from 5 followed by 7. Basically even when set to ripple pairs, 5 & 7 will always release as singles although the same number of weapons will be released. If you have a TER on 5 & 7, all weapons will be released from 5 before they start to come off 7.

Yes, you are right - I got things mixed up up bit. Guess it's not too smart to post things and work at the same time.
