Hi m8, yes we're talking CLOD It'll be a nice change of direction from the stuff I did in SH3.

Hi Chaps,
I had another good look around last night but I must admit that I'm pretty underwhelmed so far. It seems like things are pretty much as I expected, looks very pretty but, for me, it will lack immersive gameplay and long term appeal. I don't understand why they haven't included a proper QMB, the one in there is very basic and extremely poor. I don't think that I'll be playing it much as the offline looks quite boring and I'll put my intended joystick purchase on hold for the time being. I will still continue to look at the markings side of things but the game itself doesn't hold much appeal for me in its present state. Maybe with the future addition of a proper offline dynamic campaign, and a proper QMB etc. then I will come back to it at a later date but for now I'll only be modding and testing and not flying. The whole thing looks and feels extremely sterile and clinical and not at all atmospheric. Somehow the feeling of lazing in my deckchair sipping tea and listening to the strains of Vera Lynn on a barmy summer's afternoon whilst waiting to be thrown into battle is as far way as it will probably always be. It's interesting to compare the work of the BDG and that of 1C, they don't call BobII the "Time Machine" for nothing, their approach is to capture the "atmosphere" of the Battle of Britain whislt 1C's approach is all about hi-tec gloss. It's like comparing a well written history book with a glossy coffee table volume picture book,. the former is educational whilst the latter appeals solely to excite the visual senses. I don't mention this because I've worked with the BDG as I've been flying all these simulations well before getting involved with the BDG, it is just a difference in approach that's all.
Best regards
Aces

Hi chaps, My rig's not up to running CLOD on anything but low video settings, I'm actually getting 1 FPS in places, the only game that I've ever had that ran at such a low FPS, I suppose the good side is that it can only get faster as they patch it, any slower and I'm not going anywhere . I've done a bit of experimenting with settings but my quad core 2.5 GHZ, 4GB RAM, GTX260 rig just won't cut the mustard with CLOD. I'll check back after a while and see if it has been better optimised but it is totally un-playable at the moment and I've certainly not got any funds and plans for a new rig to run it as it looks very un-finished to me. I'm not overly dissapointed as it is about what I was expecting after reading all the reviews. Cheers Aces

Ace, there is big hopes the next patch(when ever it gets here) will improve the sim alot, were hoping for a big optimization of FPS plus a host of other fixes. Though nobody knows if we will get the most important fixes.

Thanks for the info m8, I really hope that they can optimise it, I was a bit suprised that the framerate was quite this poor. Actually I suppose that it is quite amusingn that it is calculating every bullet hit when the target can fly half way back to France between each of my bullets at 1 FPS . Kind Regards Leigh (Aces)

I'm not overly dissapointed as it is about what I was expecting after reading all the reviews. Cheers Aces That sounds a lot worse than the averagey worse Ace - do any of these help?: - Windows XP - CloD hates it, mainly because the DX9 (which is the highest XP supports) seems terribly done. If you need an excuse to move to Windows 7 x64 then here's one (or dual boot I guess). The DX10 render is the one they favour greatly, and I bet it might be the same for the patch too. - In Clod Settings these three doodahs (in order) kill performance: (a) Texture Quality - Put to medium, as the Original and even High on <2GB GPU's are far too large. Crazy devs. (b) Forest - The speedtree implementation is up the swaney - turn off the trees with a Forest: Off. A shame but needed. (c) Double-check that Anti-Aliasing, Anti Epilespy, SSO and VSync settings in game are all Off. These are either broke or implemented by a crazy old cat lady, whose first job in computers was just to bang the keyboard randomly until Ubisoft published it. Put everything else on Medium. Also, once you change the settings, shutdown CloD and go delete this directory before starting up: E:\Users\YourNameYouUseOnYourComputer\Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\cache Hope that gets you to the mythical 2FPS!

Hi m8, Thank you for your assistance, much appreciated. I did delete the cache folder files and also the files in the shader sub-folder. I don't know if I might buy Windows 7 one day, I hate changing operating systems but maybe I'll consider dual boot if I have the spare disc space. I appreciate your tips regarding the forest settings, I'll try them out, I have anti-aliasing, Anti epilepsy, SSO and V-sysnce already off, I have textures on medium at the moment. If it doubles my framnerates to 2FPS then that's a 100% improvement . Thanks again and kind regards Aces

Like frog says, without Win7 you can prob just forget flying. I dont know if the FMB would work to let you fiddle about in Dx9.

Yep, their choice to accidently forsake XP (with the bad DX9 implementation) was a bit of dodgy one on retrospect. I guess they were thinking all 'World of Tomorrow' at the time with foil suits and hovercars. Simmers tend to prefer stability over cutting edge, and once all the tweaks are exhaustively done then people like to leave the O/S alone - plus many sim titles have such long play life that it's a pain in the neck to get them working on a new OS version once they are happy/stable. In some ways it was a poorly researched decision, in that so many of hardcore IL2 fans must have been keen to stay on XP (for their other sims). Mind you, I say 'decision' - I don't think anyone sets out with the intention of writing a bad implementation of something, as it usually happens for free.
