Hello all,

Just a short notice that Jagged alliance back in action is now out on steam.

Forums at the developer website is mostly outrage, and would discourage any curious visitor from buying.

However, I would encourage any fan of the tactical genre (XCOM, UFO, Silent storm, Brigade E5, hired guns...) to give this game a chance.

The real time / pause system (like in the UFO afterlight game) is very well done.

There are so few games in this niche that I believe we should be encouraging them. Of course they tend to be of less overall quality than more mainstream offerings, because made by very small companies, but if they disappear we will be left with nothing at all.

Personally I enjoyed the few hours I have played with the new jagged alliance until now.

Cheers

Bongokid

I looked at it on Steam the other day and quickly clicked off when i saw it was turn based.

It is not turn-based (actually that is one of the major gripes of the old fans)

basically you can give orders in real time, or go into pause, which open a screen where you can queue orders and even synchronize them between characters : e.g. go there and fire at the same time on a target, you then watch the action unfold by leaving the pause screen.

they call this system Plan and Go.

Pre-ordered it after playing the demo, but have yet to have time to play it. What's all the whining about? It reminded me of Fallout Tactics to a degree, so I figured I would give it a go.

mains complaints include :

- no turn based : actually more and more players tend to recognize the quality of the plan and go system

- no fog of war : this seems to be the original sin. I don't mind it since you still have to design a good tactical plan

- bad UI

- bad AI

- lots of JA2 characteristics 'lost' if you regret them, or 'streamlined' if you are happy with the simplification.

To few hours under my belt to judge all this, but my first impressions are rather positive.

I know a little of what's gone on, and basically by attaching itself to the Jagged Alliance brand, all of the fans of the older JA2 expected a remake to the exact same formula of JA2/v1.13. This one uses a different game mechanic (a bit like assigning a play in American Football, then watching it play out), resulting in all of the old players who are used to the strict turn-based system getting into a bit of a tizzy.

Maybe there's something wrong with me but I find this game (at least the demo, which was what I tried) a big piece of crap!

Played the tutorial and actually liked how some things seem to worked within the game and BTW I do like the "real-time with pause" system - I find this system more "realistic" and missions take less time to complete and suposedly cheat less (IMO, time interrupts that turn based games sometimes don't work as they should).

But, when I decided to play the mission that comes with the demo, I found it to be a big piece of crap! WTF?? My guys usually fail all they shots (even the ones equiped with the Steyr Aug and M-14) at enemy soldiers "in the open" while the enemy soldiers equiped with all sorts of weapons hit my guys almost everytime they shot (the enemy have a precision of almost 100%) and this even if my guys are covered behind rocks!!

Really, I was getting high hopes on this one but so far I'm disapointed!

Big, big fan of both Jagged Alliance and JA2.

Very scared of this demo, the satisfying part of making action point based decisions, my favorite part, seems to be gone. I will try this demo though!

I thought Silent Storm wasn't as good as JA2, btw for reference. Fun, and better graphics, but really really wish they hadn't brought out the Mech suits, that's when it went downhill for me.
