I'd like to bet that the old guys are more educated and have had much more interesting lives than the young ones ever will. If I was faced with that kind of situation and was out 'looking' for conversation, I'd choose to go over and talk to the old guys every time. I've never been comfortable around people my own age, especially out in a pub or somewhere.
