Hi gentlemen!

I just would like to report back to service!
Made some bad acquaintance with the guard rails on the autobahn in the week before christmas. At a speed of about 160 kmph.
Was more than lucky to survive the accident - still got some pain in my neck and between my shoulders but it works rather fine again.
Hope to take up work again also for EAW. A lot of stuff to check...

All the best!

In diesem Sinne, alles Gute!

I'm glad to hear that you are alright. I've been on the autobahns but only as a passenger. I did manage to keep my eyes open...most of the time and I lost my voice after screaming like a little girl for the first 30 minutes.

Don't have that problem here in the States what with the lousy lane disciple exhibited by most drivers. Can't get much over 75 MPH.

And of course we now have the damn hybrid drivers puttering along in the middle lane doing the speed limit. We need a traffic violation for driving while smug.

And every now and then the universe corrects itself. Call it Karma:

Unfortunately the driver was in bed at the time which means he can go buy another one.

Alan,

Actually the picture was sent to me by a friend in LA. The tragedy occurred during a freak wind storm.

The damn things are breeding like cockroaches out in LA-LA land. In his neighborhood alone there are over THIRTY of the suckers.

Funny thing is, the latest research reveals that these hybrids overall are way worse for the environment that good old fashioned gasoline powered cars.

Of course the do-gooders aren't interested in actual facts. They just want to driver around feeling superior.

Ray you are and I tend to be on different political sides of the fence, and I generally support things "green".
Notwithstanding that, I worked as a chemistry teacher for over 40 years, and there is no question that if you burn three tons of carbon it will put eleven tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There is no such thing as "clean" coal.

The three tons could be in solid carbon such as coke, or in a hydrocarbon such as methane or the liquids in petrol and diesel fuel. The eleven tons of carbon dioxide will be produced when these fuels are used to produce energy, be it heat, kinetic or electrical.
The three tons could also be in the carbon electrodes consumed when molten alumina is electrolysed to make aluminium, or in the carbon used to reduce iron ore in blast furnaces.

So we have a car which has already caused a whole lot of carbon dioxide to go into the air in the making of the metals and glass used in its manufacture.
The electricity used in smelting aluminium probably came from a coal fired power station, so there was additional carbon dioxide released as a result of that.
However, when the car is not running on petrol, it is not releasing carbon dioxide smile
Big deal frown
If the car is being charged by plugging into a power point then the power station is adding more carbon dioxide to the air on behalf of the car.

So, on his issue we are in agreement smile
There is a lot of #%&*$# spoken and printed that ignores the indisputable chemical facts, or preys on the chemical ignorance of the audience at which it is aimed.
It would make a little difference if the power were being generated from non-carbon sources, such as wind or solar, but it would be marginal because of the sheer amount of power needed.

Sad when the facts get in the way of an ideology. Any ideology.

Worse is when it impacts me.:D

It's quite galling to pull into a rest stop on the interstate and see charging stations set up so that these little beasties can make another 100 mile hop.

Who the hell is paying for that electricity?

All of us.

Who's benefiting from the service?

A select few who bought government subsidized vehicles designed and built to assuage some misbegotten guilt.

Tony,

the adverts for those electric cars make it seem that they charge their batteries out of thin air. They don't mention these facts about the actual generation of those mystical 'free electrons' (I know that last bit about 'free e's ' isn't actually correct, I put myself through the university working as a lab aide in the chemistry department). But, we have a lot of room temperature IQ's here that believe what they are told. Look at our politics...(please don't go any farther into that bit please).

Hydrogen fuel cells or some other chemical electrical power source might be better.

pilot 20% - sudden circulatory failure - didn´t make it easier.
I´m hoping to be fine again in some weeks wink

Hey Fran_Zee,

thumbsup Congratulations on cheating death.
Not too many are successful at this.
You're one lucky S.O.B.
I hope you realize that.

cuss2Around here, we have so many Oriental drivers,
you'd be lucky to hit 90kph on any of the major
express highways on a bright sunny day...

------------------------------------------------

Hey Ray,

reading I remember when it was called 'Nuclear Winter'
and we jumped on that band wagon....

Then it was the pending approach of the 'Next Ice Age'...
and we jumped on that band wagon....

Next we heard about 'Global Warming'
and we jumped on that band wagon....

Now I hear that's been switched to 'Climate Change'
and we jumped on that band wagon too...

I think we should all stop these leaps of faith
and call it for what this really is....a "Climate of Fear"
based on bad science.

Cheers all pilot
David

If we were REALLY smart we'd buy stock in a bandwangon manufacturer.
