This one was completely unkown to me. I recorded it last weekend and watched it yesterday evening.
IMO a really good sci-fi movie with some gritty humour. Action is a little overblown at the end, but really fun to watch.
Highly recommended.

Yes I saw it on cable without knowing much about it and was pleasntly surprised by it. I thought the lead actor did a pretty good job, and he was in the A-Team movie as Mudock.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. It was refreshing to see a sci-fi film set in a country besides the US for once but then again, District 9 wasn't a Hollywood film.

Was it warm under your rock? I really enjoyed it too. Yeah, I know I come up AGAIN like someone who lives on the other side of the moon, but this one really got under my radar, never ever even heard about it. Saw it in my TV mag with a thumbs up and recorded it.

I really liked it, an interesting premise and style. It's one of those movies that when I'm flipping around on TV and it's on I watch it from whatever point it is at.

I think its biggest flaw was making the film incomplete, to make it the first part of a 2-parter that might never come.

The Jedi Master I would be surprised if the second part is never made considering that District 9 did very well. budget: 30 million global box office: 210 million http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=district9.htm

Question: would you pay money to see a D9 sequel?
I would, but I enjoyed the first one tremendously...

Question: would you pay money to see a D9 sequel?
.
I definitely would and I would be shocked if a D9 sequel wasn't greenlit because the first film didn't do "well enough". By any industry measure, a film with a 30 million dollar budget making 210 million at the global box office is fantastic. What makes NO sense to me are films like "Green Lantern" which barely made more than its 200 million dollar budget and that one already has a greenlit sequel.

District 9 was a very pleasant surprise in 2009 and I really enjoyed that movie.

It wasn't a bad flick by any means, my wife even mentioned wanting to see it again not long ago. It just seemed to borrow too much material which made it come across as a little bland to me. 1 part Alien Nation (more enjoyable movie IMO) 1 part Star Trek episode were "the crew stumbles across ____ and get turned into ____" that's been done a couple of times on different ST series.
However, it did seem like a very good set up for an epic sequel.

I am one of the few (apparently) who enjoyed the Alien Nation series. I always thought it was a better series than film. The film had a grand concept of stranded aliens and then limited it to a buddy cop story. The TV series took it more places.

The scene where they strapped down the protagonist to a table, forced him to trigger the lightning gun, and thereby murder the terrified alien cowering at the end of the firing range by literally blowing him into a disgusting mess turned me straight off the whole movie. I changed channels right away off that. That scene disturbed me greatly. It still bothers me when I think about it, honestly.

Miao, Cat I remember that some people leaved the movies/cinema back then because of that scene. I much like D9 and found it refreshing regarding to all the other SF movies.

There's no doubt the movie was almost Verhoeven-like in its violence.
My problem with D9 is more abstract. I can't really nail it down. It seems to be the kind of film I would've really liked, yet...I don't. I like the main actor, I liked the effects, the premise...pretty much every individual aspect. Yet when they were all put together...it's like having all the ingredients of a great cake and then just dumping them all together and cooking it in the oven for like 15 minutes. It COULD have been a great cake, but instead it's just a mess.

The Jedi Master I hear ya. There was also too much talk along the lines of "this is what we got due to the Halo movie failing". IMO, a well done Halo movie could be pretty good, but this was just kind of ho-hum. Seemed to be put out there without much thought or originality to the story as some kind of quick replacement.

For me, I think it was one of those situations where I didn't really know what to expect and, while I had heard relatively good reviews for it, didn't really hear a lot of raves so I wasn't expecting something big and exciting, and wasn't disappointed. I watched it on cable, so I didn't have to make a trip to the theater or buy it on disk to watch it, so I wasn't "invested" in it and hoping to get my money's worth or anything. There was one major plot point that I thought was a little too convenient, but in the context of the type of movie it was, I could live with it. I just thought it was a convenient gimmick that some goop the aliens use to power their ships would turn humans into one of them. It just seems so contrived for the story, and I can't find any logic behind it at all. I mean, it's some kind of power goop, and humans and the aliens are so different it just doesn't seem like any chemical compound could just change a human like that - it just doesn't make any sense to me.
