I'm wondering about the marking on this M44. The rifle fires the standard Mosin 7.62x54mm round. The marking appears to be a crescent & star with a crossed hammer & sword next to it. Some say it's Turkish but I was under the impression that only M91's were manufactured there. I think Iran manufactured M91's too. The only Muslim countries I know of that manufactured M44's were Eqypt and Syria. The date seems too early for Egypt. Could it possibly be Syrian? Is it Turkish and my information is incorrect about which models they manufactured? Might it be a shortened M91 from Turkey? Any insight would be much appreciated.

That's a Hungarian made rifle. 02 was their country code, and they used the x2letter/x4 number serials. The "crescent" is the left half of the Hungarian coat of arms. Stamp must have been off.

Cool, thanks Dick Dastardly, I originally thought it was an incompletely struck Soviet mark until I looked at it closely, also noticed the letters in serial number weren't Cyrillic. Didn't know about the country codes.

Eh, not really.

Vault, nice gun there! Is it all-matching?

BTW, this is what the Hungarian crest looks like when it's stamped correctly: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/0165.jpg

Yep, Luke, all numbers match. Belongs to a friend, and there's been some debate about its origin. I knew it wasn't Turkish because I recalled they only made M91's there. None of us knew about the country codes, otherwise the debate would have been solved days ago. I figured one of the SimHQ Mosin-fiends would know, had my answer in less than an hour. smile

I like the way this one shoots, and am inching closer to finally buying a carbine, though I think I want an M38 because I prefer the detachable bayonet.

Eh, yes really. Just because it doesn't to you doesn't mean it doesn't. The small symbol looks like an airplane. Suck it up.

Cool! All-matching Hungarian M44s do command a bit of a premium, because many of the ones out there right now have mismatched numbers.

I'm sure you know this BTW, but the M38 cannot accept a bayonet.
