It has been hinted at for over a decade, a japanese car maker making a comeback into the v8 paddock, mitsubishi in the late 90's then Toyota in the late 90's early and mid noughties and now Nissan are in for next year! Wow! This is really going to ramp it up and change the whole landscape of racing over here.

A four car assault backed by Nismo and with the Kelly gang at the wheel..should be awesome! I imagine it will make it a lot more interesting for overseas viewers seeing as how Nissan is well known Globally compared to our local product.

OFFICIAL STORY

NISSAN TOURING CAR HERITAGE IN AUSTRALIA

Bring it on !

Chrysler or merc were what seemed to be top runners to join,Merc initially but no news on that front for a while now. Chrysler's head of street and race technology had just been in Oz last month talking to Gary Rogers Motorsport (one of the leading teams) , he was quoted as saying 'we are very interested' smile

I wonder what engine they'll use?
Nissan haven't made a pushrod bent eight for a long time (if at all?) so I suspect they'll have to put Nissan badges on the current Ford or Chevy V8's the other two use.
Well, they all look like Ford engines anyway - Ford inlet & exhaust ports, Ford bore spacing, etc.

Ah!
Just got the good news - Nissan will be using one of their own engines and so it'll be a quad-cam most likely.

From the top gear site..

Quote:
Led by brothers Todd and Rick, Kelly Racing will enter four Nissan V8 Supercars in the 2013 series, based on a yet-to-be-decided medium-sized passenger car. Which means no, not a GT-R (sorry to get you a bit excited there) - it will be something like an Infiniti sedan (pictured above) using a Nismo V8 from Japan, tuned to around 480kW to meet V8 Supercar rules.

LINKY

Re V8's, they have the VK line of engines ,specifically the VK50VE which is a 5 litre 390 horse donk or the nismo VK56DE but at 5.6 litre'a so too big for the category.

A link to the much talked about for many seasons , Car of the Future in V8 racing.. COTF

Yes it'll be a quad-cam engine but with the restrictions/rules they have it won't be any real advantage. Four-valve engines lose their performance benefit with three things - Big engine (roughly five litres or so), low revs, and big cam.
It's one of the reasons why a four-valve 1.6 litre will spank a two-valve, but not so with the bigger & slower-revving engines.
