Guess it depends what kind of work you're doing. I'll agree that an office chair works better if you're doing work that requires looking down at the desk most of the time. Most of what I do is looking up at the monitor, and I find my seat (which looks very similar to the Obutto's) much more comfortable and supportive than an office chair.

With an office chair, I find myself leaning forward and hunching my back. With the racing seat, I'm leaned back and my back gets some lumbar support.

I guess I'm spoiled then by how great my office chair is, both at work and at home. Herman Miller Aaeron chair. Kicks the ass of my Obutto chair and other office chairs I've used in terms of long term sitting sessions. After about 30-45 minutes in the Obutto (which is comfortable), I need to stretch or shift position.

Stretching off topic here, but are you sure it's not because when you're sitting in an office chair doing "office work" you're naturally moving around more, whereas when flying/racing/surfing you're generally quite motionless?

I'm sure an aeron would be more comfortable than what I normally use as "office chairs" (every chair I've had at my computer for the past 20 years has been under $100 and usually after a few months the padding wears out such that my ass bones are hitting a hard surface) but still...a racing seat just wraps me in support and spreads my weight much better. I could stand to lose a few pounds, but I'm not that heavy (~ 180-185)

Ok, Seems we're going with the "out of Sight, out of mind" philosophy.
Once the Obutto was removed from view she has calmed down.
set up in my basement now, but that works out great as I am further removed from distractions



UPS tracking page says my new monitor is at my house, but I just got to work, so it'll be a few hours befor I get to mount it and do a full test.

Funny you mention Aeron I got a second hand aeron chair and while it was comfortable for office work, it is not dual purpose as it's terribly for flying in.

It's actually why I got the Obutto after trying and failing a few times to get a good flying chair.

In fact I think ANY chair with a swivel and/or wheels is not good for flying. The slight swivel that happens when you use the rudder is enough to throw off your aim/precision.

When I was doing my best dogfighting in rise of flight before the obutto, it was on an $80 dining chair I moved up to the office My butt got sore after a while but I was happy to shoot planes.

After a while that sore butt made me convince the wife to get the Obutto (I said it would be better for my back in the long run she doesn't want a husband with a bad back)

Here's a tip that worked out well for me-
Since it is my desk and pit, i use the swivel keyboard tray.
I didn't want to have to adjust the tray height each time I needed to use it.
My solution:


3/4" PVC coupling. I measured the difference between the pole fully inserted and where I wanted it.
In my case it was 2.5 inches. I put one 2.5" x 3/4" coupling into the mount tube followed by a greased washer. Then put the tray mount pole in.
Now my keyboard swivels around and is at the right height each time.

Also, since I have to remove the center stick mount to use the keyboard, I did the same thing there.
This time it was 4", so I got a 4"x3/4" coupling and inserted it. Now when I drop the stick mount in, I don't have to fuss with getting it's height right.
It's the same each time. Regular 3/4" PVC will work just as well, but the coupling were cheap and the right length was readily availible.

I had Mark make a mount for my Obutto to substitute a Touchscreen Monitor mount for the wheel mount. Now when I fly I can simply pull out the wheel, leaving it attached and use a touchscreen centered on and below the triple monitors in font of me.
