I think if an entertainer is on TV and something happens that can be directly attributed to him or her or he or she causes something to happen and the FCC levels a fine, then that person should pay the entire fine. Not the network or the event sponsor.

This should also apply to a TV show's creator in the case of an animated feature.

oh man, if i was an executive of a TV station, and I knew I could have the most, outlandish, outspoken repulsive, sensational, problem causing people on my show, and they could do whatever they could to get ratings, and I wouldn't get fined, but THEY would? Oh man.... *rubs hands together*

Halftime shows should just be a local high school marching band doing a few Sousa numbers anyway. It's not as if stars like Madonna and the rest actually need the exposure, and letting some typical teens entertain the crowd on the field would be a big thing for them, and in keeping with the small town roots of many of the players in the game. If that sort of thig would not be of interest to the television audience, then the network analysts can maybe talk about football instead of showing the band during halftime. That has to be better than showing some shrieking tart giving the world the finger or bursting out of her blouse, neither of which really seems to have a lot to do with American football.

They don't play football games halfway through the grammys so why the hell do they have a concert halfway through a football game? Two things I'd do away with if I had the power: super bowl halftime shows and the pro bowl.

I agree with the OP.

These halftime shows are getting ridiculous.

A drumline competition between Navy and Army would suit me just fine.

They should've seen this coming when they thought to include MIA in the halftime show to begin with- controversy is pretty much the girl's middle name.

I'd like to know who decided that MADONNA was the type of music suitable for a football game, anyway? I always thought Slayer would be the ultimate football band - music to hurt someone to!

I swear, I'm so sick of it it is probably banned in my house from now on. We go to every Chiefs game, are huge football fans and I cannot watch the super bowl with my kids for the past few years, especially.

Between the flipping Go Daddy commercials and their copiers, and the half time show itself ("I don't give a bleep" at the same time the finger goes up), it's impossible.

Freaking degenerates.

Madonna has an upcoming album as I recall, does Slayer?

I believe she does- I heard the first single off it on the radio a couple of days ago, and it made me want to vomit. But hey, it's no worse than Nickelback, right? wink

The reality is that the Superbowl is a multi-billion dollar industry, not some local charity event. Your suggestion is naive to the extreme.

Hey, Canada needs SOMETHING to replace an aging Rush and Bryan Adams.

I thought all the way through the halftime show What in the Heck is this Crap? A Madonna medley and she's dancing like she needs a walker! and Cee-Lo and MIA were just as ridiculous choices as well. I would have preferred Nickleback and Rush over them any day, at least Kelly Clarkson did a great job on the Anthem at the beginning.

I only ever heard one album from Nickelback, the one with the car on the cover. Didn't stick with me. As for Madonna, I'm only really am familiar with the 1980s stuff that made her famous. During the Superbowl when she was singing songs I'd never heard before, I had no idea if some of it was new.

But in any case, it's about promotion. A woman I know mentioned seeing an older actor on TV a while back and I asked "what are they promoting?" which she thought was a strange question. Well nobody appears on TV unless it's to promote something new, by and large. Stars don't just drop in on Good Morning America for an interview because they are in town getting their limo registered!

Very true. The vast majority of the time the celebrity is promoting either a film, tv show, album, book or anything else that will be for sale to the public.

Tom Petty, The Who, and Aerosmith weren't promoting new albums when they played the halftime.

And I still say Madonna isn't music to hit people to LOL.

This page indicates (last paragraph) that Aerosmith's "Just Push Play" was released just after their Superbowl appearance:

Heheh, no problem I had to look it up because I didn't know.

Looks like The Who had a tour planned for 2010 after their Superbowl performance (not sure it materialized though), and Tom Petty started a north American tour after Super Bowl XLII.

Right so even if there is no new album to promote, there is usually a new tour that is being promoted by making an appearance on the SB. I mean, what better way to promote your new world tour than by performing during a sporting event that is watched by a couple hundred million people worldwide?
