Hi all,

I put up a new movie, and this time it is a bit more useful than the fun vids I've made so far. It is my best attempt at a Spitfire Mk. I Tutorial movie.

Find the movie on my web site: www.flightsimvids.com

There is a LOT more work to making a tutorial video than to my usual vids for pure amusement, so I hope you will appreciate the effort! (Even if perhaps not the result...)

If you haven't enjoyed the superb fun that is flying with Complex Engine Management in Il-2 CoD maybe now is the time!

- The Spitfire modelled in CoD really gives a tremendous feeling of raw power wrapped inside a beautiful, streamlined aeroplane. When you master it (I'm still not quite there) you will have a great feeling of the sky belonging to you, zooming around effortlessly at the flick of a wrist and the slight push of a lever. There is heft and inertia to the plane, and it can be quite daunting to take it up, but it DOES help that one's behind is not on the line, and that the hierarchy won't have that behind served on a platter if you muck up...

I can only imagine the excitement and fear that must have gripped young recruits back then, 70-odd years ago, when they first walked out to a parked Spitfire before taking her up. Actually, I can imagine it much better now that I have flown it in CoD.

Big thanks go to 2GvSAP_Flea, who helped me a lot with the video, and whose super-impressive "Il-2 CoD Aircraft Operations Checklist" can be found on my web site as well. Also thanks to jf1981 (1C forums), whose comments and quick guide helped a lot too. I made my own quick guide (partly based on Flea's pdf and jf1981's document) and linked it at the web site too, for those who want to just jump into the Spit and get her into the air. And maybe even land...

Pls comment if you think I should correct some things in the movie, or well, if you just feel like it...

I've enjoyed all your vids, but that was most helpful!

btw, how did you know you were lined up for landing? Visual cues, or compass?

ps Could I persuade you for a small video tutorial on the Full Mission Builder?

Sorry, I know too little on the FMB to make a tutorial... - I'd like to see one too!

I just lined up visually. Didn't even set the compass for this flight, but I may make a short tutorial vid on setting up the compass/direction finder. It would have been thrown off by the spin, though. It is quite a sensitive instrument, and that is perfectly simulated in CoD.

Glad you liked it!

Nice job Sir!
If the game had come with something like this I may not have given up on it so easily.
Mind you,the shoddy release didn't help.

I still have it installed,so I may fire it up again sometime soon.

Yes. The Russian development team was was extremely lacking when it comes to the all-important documentation. And they were told well before release as well... They are much better programmers than editors!

Frey, excellent!

In many ways it seems the CoD Spit is equal to, or better, than the A2A Spit in FSX! Which is "more" correct, I couldn't say (I don't have CoD, and I have never flown a Spitfire), but they agree on so many points. The A2A model does seem to be more fussy on temperatures and radiator control, though.

One minor quibble, however. I was going to spend one night "FSX free", but after watching your video, I feel compelled to hook up the stick and throttle, and go flying in FSX, instead of watching a movie.

BTW, I have a request and maybe someone in here can help me out...

The biggest difficulty of making tutorial vids like the Spitfire Mk. I movie I just did is to get a list of the correct aircraft operations. A script for the videos, in short.

I got lots of help from Flea's very comprehensive pdf, and based on that one I made my own "quick guide" (see below).

What I need is a SIMILAR check list for the Bf-109E-1/3 (manual prop pitch), because that is the one that will star in my next video. Do you think you can help me out? Not necessarily with the whole thing, but maybe just with bits and pieces of the complete list.

Importantly, I don't want just "educated guesses". I'd like it to be the proper historical procedure as amended for Il-2 CoD. What do I mean by that? Well, for instance in the case of the Spit it is not necessary to flick the magnetos on before ignition. It is done automatically in this sim when you press ignition, which I think is a good compromise between realism and playability (Basically, pressing "i" is short for "throwing the magneto switches and then engaging the starter".

Many arcane and superfluous steps have been omitted from the sim, and I'd like to weed them out of the "quick guide" too.

So, do you think you can help me with something like this, but for the 109?:

SPITFIRE Mk. I

Start-up:
Fuel cock Open
Mixture lever Rich
Throttle Idle
Prop pitch Fine
Radiator Fully open

Take-off:
RPM ~2800
Boost Not above +6.25
Take-off +85 mph
Climb speed 160 mph

Landing:
Mixture lever Rich
Prop pitch Fine
Gear down Below 160 mph
Flaps down Below 140 mph
Landing speed 90 mph

- What aditionally would be really great is to also have the explanation for (for instance) the dials and why a particular ATA boost level is correct. In the Bf-110 for example, the ATA has "d", "15" and "30" on the dial, meaning the boost that is acceptable for (infinite) "duration", and for 15 and for 30 minutes. It is stuff like that I need to explain in the videos.

Also settings for climb and for cruise are needed, as well as the spin recovery drill.

For the next video I would like to also include trimming the plane, which is missing from the Spittie vid, but which I should have included.

Anyway, I thank you for your contributions and I hope we can nail this!

Nicley done Freycinet. I only watched the first vid but will watch the others later. These types are always fun to watch and most helpful.

Glad you liked it! Next up will probably be a Bf-109E tutorial... If only RL didn't get in the way all the time!..

Wow great video Freycinet, that looks absolutely gorgeous on your system which is 10x better than the mess I see on my ATI based system.

I've recently been loving the A2A P-40c in FSX and revisited COD hoping to check out the BF-109, but was disappointed to see what it looks like on my system.

I will revisit the COD forums to see if there's any tweaks for my ATI5870 based system to stop all the shadow flickering and stutters to get something like you had in that video, otherwise I think I am possibly going to pick up a GTX 680 or 580 later this year.

Super video! Thanks for putting that out these so people like me can see what it looks like for some of you daily fliers of COD, hope to be at that point in a few months.

You can see the Bf-109 in a lot of the other videos on my site (see sig). But don't deprive yourself of taking a gander at the Bf-110 as well: absolutely gorgeous cockpit.
